Morelia
What is it? Where is it?
Morelia is the capital city of the Mexican state of Michoacán where the 2007 ATBC Meeting
is being held.
MORELIA was known in colonial times as Nueva Valladolid, because it reminded the
“Conquistadores” of that Spanish town. Nowadays it is considered to be the most noble of all
Mexican colonial cities. The architecture has been kept in the tradition of old Spain. Its
seventeenth century Cathedral built of pinkish stone dominated by two 200 feet towers which
took about 200 years to finish it is doubtlessly the most significant landmark, but the massive
and yet elegant aqueduct built in 1790 with more than 250 arches is another obvious
reference.
The handicraft activity here is predominant mainly for woodcarvings, pottery, copper and
lacquerware and woven goods.
A region in New Spain where culture and art prospered thanks to its surrounding wealth here
is where one of the first colleges of higher education was built in addition to churches and
monasteries where fine arts and sciences were cultivated.
Its heritage lasts to this day.
Located between the center of the Republic and the Pacific Coast, Michoacán lies in one of
the most fertile valleys in Mexico. The climate is mild providing ideal conditions to exotic flora
and fauna.
Morelia, with its monuments, palaces and convents. Pátzcuaro, a beautiful town on the shores
of a lake by the same name, where the well known Day of the Dead celebration takes place;
Uruápan and its National Park; Zirahuén with a magnificent lagoon which attracts visitors all
year round; the Sanctuaries of the Monarch Butterfly; the Paricutin Volcano; Tzintzuntzan,
once the capital of the Purepecha kingdom; Santa Clara del Cobre; the Purépecha Plateau a
string of small ancient villages where indigenous life style is still kept about the same as it was
centuries back; springs of thermal waters and spas; just to name a few, are attractions worth
visiting!
Good Convention and Meeting venues provide the state with excellent facilities to hold all
sorts of events, such as seminars, congresses and conventions.
International Music and Movies Festivals of Morelia, festivals of Guitar, Organ, Mariachi,
Local Folk Dances, Gastronomy, etc. are main attractions for those interested.
Morelia and all the state of Michoacán are also served by outstanding hotel accommodation,
excellent restaurants and a variety of night spots from a traditional “peña” to a modern disco,
local theatres, etc.
