Title
Science, Enterprise & Education Manager
Background
Founded in 1985, The Oxford Trust is a company limited by guarantee
and a registered charity. Its mission is to encourage the pursuit of
science and enterprise. The Oxford Trust is highly regarded as an
independent foundation at the heart of Oxfordshire’s science,
education and enterprise networks and it has played an influential role
at a national level. The Trust sponsors a number of different
programmes targeted at different audiences, all of which come under
the ‘Science Oxford’ umbrella. Science Oxford is the brand name for
the public face of The Oxford Trust. While the Trust remains the legal
entity which employs staff and which holds contracts with external
organisations, Science Oxford and its various programmes are the
brand names used to interact with the public, schools and business. In
what follows we use ‘Science Oxford’ as a shorthand description of
The Oxford Trust.
Existing activities of Science Oxford include;
o Science Oxford Live, A venue in Oxford offering events for the public, schools
and businesses, and a programme of activities for public audiences.
o Science Oxford Next, An extensive series of programmes, events and activities
targeted at inspiring interest in science and enterprise in young people
o Science Oxford Networks, is the umbrella name given to our activities
supporting and developing Oxfordshire’s high tech economy.
Our activities range from engaging young people and the public in science to acting
as a catalyst to encourage the commercial application of research. Our offices are
presently located at Science Oxford Live in St Clements, Oxford.
Purpose
To manage, deliver and develop Science Oxford’s science and
enterprise activities which link business and academia with young
people. Delivery of the STEM Ambassadors (STEMAs) contract in Milton
Keynes, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire (MKOB).
Reporting to Head of Research and Innovation
Liaising with Head of Learning and STEM Resources Manager
Main Responsibilities
To develop and deliver initiatives linking schools with business. This involves:






Developing and supporting the delivery of Science Oxford’s science
and enterprise portfolio of activities for young people
Working with the Head of Research and Innovation in developing new
science and enterprise workshops and initiatives
Developing and rolling out a strategy to encourage school uptake of
science and enterprise programmes
Utilising STEMAs and other role models in the science and enterprise
programmes
Working with the Head of Research and Innovation to research and
write grant proposals for new science and enterprise programmes,
including those which involve collaboration with STEMAs
As part of the Science Oxford Networks Team provide additional
support as and when required
To deliver the STEMAs contract, liaising with the STEM Resources Manager, this
involves:








Inputting information into the national database and quarterly
reporting to STEMNET
Maximising income from contract
Recruitment of STEMAs from academic and business organisations
across the Oxfordshire region
Organising (with support from the Administration Team) and running
training sessions for STEMAs
Matching requests from schools with suitable STEMAs
Supporting STEMAs with regular communication and through
celebration and additional training events
Liaison with the Administration Team over STEMAs registration and
monitoring, CRB checks and CRB renewals
Liaison, where appropriate, with the national STEMAs Manager and
Regional Director at STEMNET
To deliver and develop the Nuffield Bursary Scheme, this involves:



Sourcing projects from both research and commercial organisations
Sourcing students and matching to projects
Providing support and coordinating celebration event

Salary:
Negotiable, Up to £24,000 pa based on a 37.5 hour
week. Normally paid direct to bank account on the
27th of each month.
Start date:
{start date} This is a fixed term contract of 2 years
Place of work:
Science Oxford Live, 1-5 London Place Oxford
Hours of work:
37.5 hours per week. Core office hours are 8.30am to
5.00pm Monday to Friday with one hour lunch break
but flexible working patterns are considered. There will
be work outside these hours when breakfast and
evening events are scheduled for which there will be no
extra pay.
Holidays:
25 days pa pro rata based on a 37.5 hour week. All
English bank and public holidays. No holiday period
greater than 2 weeks at a time. Leave year extends
from 1 January to 31 December with no carry over.
Transport:
It is necessary for the postholder to hold a valid UK
driving licence and to have access to the use of a car
in order to fulfil the duties of the position. Travel
expenses may be reclaimed at the end of each month
at the Trust’s standard mileage rate and this need to be
signed off by the Head of Research and Innovation. It is
the responsibility of the postholder to ensure that the
vehicle insurance covers business use as incidents
causing damage to an employee’s own vehicle or to
third parties are not covered under The Oxford Trust’s
insurance policy.
Sick Pay:
In accordance with statutory requirements as detailed
in the Staff Handbook
Pension:
6% of salary is contributed by the Trust towards pension
through The Oxford Trust Pension Scheme. This is a
money purchase scheme and is approved for tax
purposes by the Inland Revenue. Additional personal
contributions may be made into the scheme. Salaried
staff are eligible to join the scheme after 6 months’
continuous employment.

Period of Notice:
Six weeks both ways, given and required.
