Suggested Activities
To pass &
receive the ball
effectively
Warm up: Cups & cones – spread lots of
cones into a small area. Split the class in two.
Half have to turn the disc cones upright and
the other half have to turn them upside
down. Switch and repeat.
Once the ch are warm, then they can begin
stretching on the line. Always active

lateral passes.
1: In pairs, pop pass the ball to each other
from a metre apart, ensuring it always hits
the target. The children’s hands should form
a ‘W’ over the ball. Repeat several times, look
for good examples.
2: Get the children into groups of 6 – can
they now pass the ball around a small circle.
3: Enlarge to two circles, passing the ball
round. Encourage competition between the

anyone can remember any of them.
1: Partner passing to recap skills. Continue
passing but this time, get them to pass
laterally too (from the side)
2: Evasion – everyone needs a tag belt, or 1
or 2 tags tucked in their shorts. In a square
area, the children have evade the 2 or 3
taggers from getting their tag. Stop after a
minute, who has evaded capture? What
could they do to ensure they don’t get caught
next time? Repeat.
3: Finish with all ch in the square – they are
all aiming to evade capture and tag others.

Warm up: Stuck in the mud – play tag but
when someone has been tagged, they need
to be released by two people who make a
circle around them by linking arms.
1: In a square grid, children have to run from
one side to the other without being tagged
(bulldog). As more people get tagged and join
the taggers, it becomes harder to evade.
Encourage the taggers to stay in a straight
line – that way the runners have to come
through it.
2: Have two groups of 3 that join hands, they
are to tag as many people as possible – the
others have to evade capture. They will be
holding a ball. Ensure they are holding the
ball with both hands! If they get tagged, they
lose the ball and join the chain.
3: Finish with the circle passing drill from
week 1.
Warm up: Cups & cones (week 1)
1: In groups of 5 or 6, pass the ball between
each other. Once passed they have to run
behind the person they passes it to. This will
need plenty of practice and will benefit from
modelling from the more able players.
2: In teams of 6 (more if needed), have two
teams. One attacking, one defending. The
attackers have a ball each – if they can get

more than one

their ball to the other side and touch it down,
they get a point (one per ball). If they get
tagged, they have to stop. Switch over and
repeat. This activity gets the children running
forward with ball in hand and encourages the
evasion skills from previous weeks.
Warm up: Netball – in teams of 6 or 7, the
children have to get the rugby ball from one
side to the other and place in a hoop. Once
they have the ball in hand, they cannot
move. This game gets ch used to passing and
moving.
1: As week 4, but with only one ball. This
time, the children need to pass to their team
mate. If the ball is dropped, they can pick it
up but only 3 times. After that, they have to
hand it over to the other side. If they get
tagged, they have 3 seconds/steps to make a
pass. Score by touching the ball down beyond
the line.
2: Play this game several times through with
both sides getting opportunity to run forward
with the ball and defend as a line.
If some ch are not seeing much play and it is
dominated by a few of them, ensure
everyone on the team has to touch the ball
before a score is made.

4: Some ch may be
able to run a clever
line and split the
defence – use as a
teaching point.
1: The ch will be
able to pass the ball
and receive it
without dropping.
2: They will
tag/tackle quickly.
3: They will include
all team members.
4: Some ch will be
able to pass and
move quickly –
these could be
designated leaders
to coach the others.

Warm up: Evasion – all children in a square
grid, they have to dodge tacklers yet take
tags off others.
1: Repeat week 5
2: If the children are confident, then the rule
of passing backwards can be introduced. Run
forwards, pass backwards! This may only be
possible with certain children.
