Instructional Material #4 Response Sheet 02774603 1) This instructional material are pictures of the visual lesson goal and sentence starter posters used throughout the lesson featured in the video entry, as well as during all instructional time in the classroom. The visual lesson goal poster identifies the 3rd grade social studies standard in cultural anthropology, viewing, listening, and speaking standards written in student friendly “I will” statements. The visual lesson goal poster also includes pictures of eyes, a visual for viewing, an ear, a visual for listening, and a mouth, a visual for speaking. The lesson goal poster was posted in the front of the classroom, to the left of the Smartboard for effective visual access for all students. The visual sentence starter poster has the same pictures related to viewing, listening, and speaking, as well as the sentence starters, “I see” and “Because of what I see, I wonder” related to viewing, “Can you tell me more about” and “I’m also wondering” related to listening, and “What I mean is” and “What do you mean by” related to speaking. The sentence starter poster was posted on the bottom of the Smartboard, in the front of the classroom, right at eye level for the students and where they sat for the small and whole group discussions during each student presentation on their family cultural tradition. 2) The visual lesson goal and sentence starter posters were used to review the lesson goals and sentence starters of the cultural anthropology lesson. Along with the use of the PowerPoint slides, these posters were very useful because the students had visual access of these while presenter’s showed the slide (only thing visible during actual presentation) of their family cultural tradition. The visual posters were also valuable during other instructional periods throughout the day because they served as resources and sentence starters in facilitating any collaborative conversation or whole group discussion. I observed many students using these sentence starters to facilitate discussion during other instructional times, like Reader’s/Writer’s workshop, Math, and Science.
