The Science Department The Science Department at Wales is highly enthusiastic and dynamic and committed to driving high standards and developing the potential of our students. Our department is constantly striving to improve the attainment of every student and we regularly adapt our teaching, curriculum and intervention strategies to ensure that our curriculum is bespoke and students’ learning is personalised. We work hard to support and challenge individuals so they make the best possible progress in Science. We are a large, supportive department who welcomes new colleagues and new challenges. The Department consists of nineteen teaching staff including NQTs, experienced subject specialists and an Assistant Headteacher and is strengthened by four laboratory technicians. The Department is led by Mrs Quibell, Head of Science, who is supported by additional members of the department in key roles. In addition to the Head of Department, there are Heads of Subject and Progress Leaders for KS3 and 4. There is also a support staff team of 6, including a team of 4 technicians. It is through the technicians that a wide range of practical equipment, worksheets and other resources can be requested to assist with teaching and learning. There is also a Team Leader for Science Support, who is responsible for co-ordinating the work of the technicians in addition to other specific learning related duties. The majority of staff in the department are subject specialists with a great deal of outstanding practice evident. Some members of the department also work with a range of exam boards as examiners, moderators and team leaders. Science is taught in a suite of eleven laboratories, all of which are equipped with smart boards and multimedia projectors. The Department also has three IT rooms which are equipped with wired, networked computers. A wireless network operates in one laboratory where laptops are available. At KS5 we deliver AS/A2 Levels in AQA Biology (B), AQA Chemistry and OCR Physics. OCR Applied Science A-Level is currently offered as a vocational alternative. The subjects at KS5 are taught by subject specialists. At KS4 we currently deliver Individual Sciences and also Science A and Additional Science from the AQA suite of science courses. We also offer Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Awards as a vocational alternative. In the majority of cases, KS4 is taught by subject specialists. Students start KS4 during Year 9. At KS3 all students study our own in-house scheme of work (based on QCA). The scheme draws on the wide range of science topics including How Science Works. Students are given regular feedback and are formally assessed through tests. Students are set by ability in the autumn term and adjusted if necessary at key assessment points throughout the year. WALES HIGH SCHOOL Science Intervention Coach ~ Job Description ~ Responsible to: Head of Science / Headteacher Post: 37 hours per week (Term-time only) Scale: Band F (Pt 22 to 25) Main Purpose To provide individual tuition and intervention support to improve the progress of students on a one-to-one or small group basis. To assist in classes or where support is required for individual students. To provide administrative support for the Science department. To support in lessons as required which will include covering for absent teaching staff. Duties and Responsibilities Support for the Head of Science 1. To support the Head of Science with the administration needs of the department. 2. To support technicians in the management of resources, and place orders for stock and resource materials, as required. 3. To oversee, organise and monitor the collection of data from Science teachers and the distribution of data to students/parents/teaching staff – as well as, assisting with the management of the departmental pupil database. 4. To contribute annually to the production of the Science Department timetable by liaison with the member of SLT with responsibility for the timetable (on an annual basis) to consider teaching rotas, teaching rooms and so forth. Support for the Science Department 1. To meet with class teachers to identify and plan intervention and personalised learning programmes for students. 2. To prepare and deliver intervention sessions for individuals and small groups of students in all key stages and where appropriate this may involve outreach work and flexible hours. 3.
