UNIQUE EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY FOR TEACH FOR AMERICA ALUMNI
JOIN THE ST. HOPE-TEACH FOR AMERICA LEADERSHIP FELLOWS PROGRAM
SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA
St. HOPE-Teach For America Leadership Fellows Qualifications:
Fellows are driven, self motivated Teach For America alumni who aspire to positions of leadership within the
intersection of school or school district leadership, education policy reform, and community development.
St. HOPE-Teach For America Leadership Fellows Premise:
Fellows recognize that in order for community revitalization to occur in our inner cities, efforts must be multi-pronged
and incorporate individual choice and responsibility in public education, civic engagement, economic development
and the arts. Fellows will serve as classroom teachers, while participating in personal and professional development
opportunities in school or school district leadership, education policy reform and community development. This is a
unique opportunity to learn and effect change from multiple perspectives to improve the lives of young people in the
Oak Park neighborhood of Sacramento.
The St. HOPE and Teach For America Partnership:
TFA intends to place Corps Members in Sacramento in the fall of 2007. Fellows who stay at St. HOPE through 2007
will have an opportunity to mentor new Corps Members and assist the new region in other capacities. Teach For
America already has a core of alumni working at St. HOPE, including Jenna Elam (Bay Area ’03), Tom Ryan
(Phoenix ‘97), and Cristin Fiorelli (Washington DC ’98). St. HOPE founder Kevin Johnson serves on TFA’s national
board of directors. Join these alumni to make a difference at St. HOPE.
About St. HOPE:
St. HOPE was founded in 1989 by NBA All-Star and Sacramento native Kevin Johnson. ST. HOPE integrates public
education with economic development and community revitalization efforts through:
 St. HOPE Public Schools: Sacramento High School, PS7, and a future Preschool
 St. HOPE Development Company: A non-profit real estate acquisition and management company that has created
14 new businesses in Oak Park, 282 new jobs, and renovated 9 buildings.
 40 Acres Art Gallery and Cultural Center: A mixed use retail complex featuring The Guild Theater, underground
books, Starbucks, 40 Acres Art Gallery, Uncle Jed’s Cut Hut, a future restaurant site, and loft-style apartments.
What We Believe at St. HOPE:
At St. HOPE we believe that only when people in inner-city communities are informed and engaged will we see real
change occur in urban neighborhoods. We believe that you cannot do things “to” a community if you want true
transformation. If we educate and empower residents, we can have an immediate, strong and long-lasting impact on
a community. The culture and expectations in neighborhoods can be radically changed for the better through a
combination of an increase in school quality and student academic performance; visible, powerful civic leadership by
young people; a sustainable economy led by profitable businesses; and a rich cultural environment.
St. HOPE-Teach For America Leadership Fellows Overview:
St. HOPE recognizes that the Teach For America experience equips alumni with the insight and drive to continue to
work toward educational equity both within the classroom and on a broader level. The Fellows program allows
individuals with proven leadership in the classroom to pursue a more comprehensive understanding of the issues
surrounding education reform, the cultivation of civic leadership and community revitalization.
Fellows will serve as teachers at either Sacramento High School or PS7 Elementary, participate in issuefocused work sessions, and convene at brown bag discussions with many of St. HOPE’s key community,
business and policy partners who are working to improve public education and low-income communities.
