Noted events in her life were:
• History: 1888. 118 ..."While Mr. Graham was in the service, in the autumn of 1777, the "big
runaway" took place on the Susquehanna River. But his wife and children escaped with the
other settlers. In their fearful trip down the Susquehanna the canoe, in which Mrs. Graham had
placed her children and such of her household goods as she could bring with her in her flight,
was upset, and all the contents submerged in the river. One of the relics preserved from that
perilous time is an ancient Concordance of the Bible, which is still safely preserved by the
1
descendants of the intrepid dame, and which yet shows the effects of the baptism it then
received. It is a very ancient work, probably the first of the kind ever published."
Martha married John GRAHAM, son of John GRAHAM and Janet CALDWELL, in Dauphin

• History: 1888. 118 ..."John, who, hearing such glowing accounts of the New World, emigrated to the
"Land of Penn," and settled on a farm in what was then Dauphin county, where he married Miss
Martha Miller. At the commencement of the Revolutionary War he enlisted in the American army,
and after bing in a number of battles was captured by the British at the battle near Flushing, on Long
Island, and held a prisoner for two years in New York city, where he was approached by British

• History: 1888. 122 ..."When he came to manhood he engaged in taking out, and running to market, masts
for ship building---running them down the Susquehanna River to Havre de Grace. When, about the year
1797, a colony was formed in Dauphin and Lycoming counties, called the "Big Emigration," for the
purpose of locating on French Creek, Crawford county, young Graham joined the expedition. They loaded
their effects in canoes and transported them to a point on the Sinnemahoning, where they were taken
overland by pack-horses to the Allegheny River, and again loaded on canoes and carried down the river to
French Creek, and up that creek to a point near Meadville. He remained here until 1804, when he came to
Port Barnett, and went to work for Joseph Barnett, working on the mill, running lumber, etc, until 1807,
when he was married to Sarah Ann, eldest daughter of Mr. Barnett. In 1821 he moved on a arm in Union
township now owned by Sheridan McCullough, where he remained until 1830, when he removed to Eldred
township, where he resided until his death in 1854. Mr. Graham came very near having to be a soldier, as
his father had been before him, as he was "pressed into service" by Colonel Bird in 1812, but after being
detained at Waterford some two weeks, was allowed to return home. He was clerk for the first board of
county commissioners, and served for court crier for several years. His venerable widow survived him until
October, 1885, having lived to the great age of ninety-five years."
• History: 1898, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania. 119 "Elijah M. Graham was born in Dauphin County,
Pennsylvania, October 19, 1772. His father's name was John Graham, who served five years in the
Continental army.
Elijah M. Graham was on of the original explorers of what is now Jefferson County, Pennsylvania. He
explored this region in 1794 under Deputy-Surveyor Broadhead. In that year Broadhead surveyed the
district line which now forms the western boundary of Brookville borough. Broadhead and his party of nine
men were in this wilderness surveying from May until the middle of October, 1794. The party consisted of
Department-Surveyor Broadhead, two chain-carriers (Elijah M. Graham and Elisha Graham, brothers), two
axe-men (unknown), one cook (unknown), one driver with two horses (unknown), and two other men
(unknown), one of whom was a hunter. These parties crossed streams on log floats, encamped in log huts,
and carried their outfit and their provisions on pack horses from what is now Franklin, Pennsylvania, and
from some point then in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. Graham was six months on this survey
without seeing a paleface other than those that comprised the party.
In 1797, Elijah M. Graham located on French Creek, now Crawford County, Pennsylvania, where he
resided with his father until 1804, when he returned to this wilderness and worked on Joseph Barnett's mill
for three years, when and where he married Miss Sarah Ann Barnett and located on the State Road near and
afterwards in what is now Eldred township. He was the first court crier, and served in various township
offices.
In 1804 there were but seven or eight families here, --viz., the Barnetts, Longs, Joneses, Vasbinders, and
Dixons, and one colored family.
Mr. Graham reared a family of ten children, only three or four of whom, including J.B. are now living.
Elijah M. Graham died in 1854, aged eight-two years.
Elijah married Sarah Ann BARNETT, daughter of Joseph BARNETT and Elizabeth SCOTT, on 30 Mar
1807 in Pennsylvania. (Sarah Ann BARNETT was born on 11 Mar 1790 in Pennsylvania 31, christened on
28 Feb 1869 in Eldred Township, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania at Mount Tabor Church 110 and died on
27 Oct 1885 in Sigel, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania 31,110,111.)

Dearest mother, thou has left us,
But we dare not grieve for thee,
For we know 'twas Jesus called thee,
And from sorrow thou art free.
Mother went to sleep in Jesus;
All who watched her dying bed
Could but realize the angels
Hovering close around her bed.
