Copy for Chris’ Brochure What Designers Should Know About Paper Paper has unique qualities that designers need to consider for their projects: Paper is measured in special increments unique to the trade Paper can be coated or uncoated Paper has a brightness number Paper means white is a color too! Paper can be 100% virgin or contain recycled content and/or post-consumer content. Recycled means scraps on the floor of the paper mill were recycled into the paper production process. Post-consumer content means the paper you put in recycling bins was re-used The brightness of a piece of paper is measured on a scale of 1 to 100 with 100 being the brightest. Inexpensive photocopy papers are in the high 80s or low 90s; expensive commercial papers are 97-100 and make your work look better. The grade of a paper is determined by how much light the paper reflects -- in other words, how white it is. Premium sheets reflect the most light and are the whitest; they are also the most expensive. Lightweight papers are measured in pounds based on the weight of 500 uncut sheets. In other words, 500 sheets of 17” x 22” 20-pound bond will weigh 20 pounds. That’s the weight of paper we all see in photocopiers. Heavier paper, sometimes called card or cover stock, can be measured in pounds or in points such as 8, 10 or 12 pt. These aren’t the same points as typography but are specific to the paper trade. C1S = Coated One Side (matte on the other) C2S = Coated Two Sides Gloss = a coated paper with a shiny finish Matte = an uncoated paper; sometimes paper is made more matte by applying a non-glossy coating Domtar Paper Paper has the power to inspire new thoughts and big ideas.
