The British Council Institut Teknologi Bandung University of Leeds Tenth International Conference The Language Curriculum and Assessment ITB Bandung Indonesia 3rd – 5th June 2014 Call for Papers The Bandung International Conferences - jointly organised by Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), the British Council in Indonesia and the University of Leeds (UK) – explore issues of topical concern to language educators in Indonesia. They also attract significant numbers of participants from other parts of the world. The Tenth International Conference has a double focus: the language curriculum and the assessment of language competence. The conference will explore the relationships between these two issues. Confirmed keynote speakers include: Dr Martin Wedell, University of Leeds, UK; author of Planning for Educational Change and co-author of Understanding Language Classroom Contexts: The Starting Point for Change Itje Chodidjah, independent education management professional, Indonesia Prof Iwan Pranoto, Institut Teknologi Bandung, Indonesia Dra Hj Teriska R. Setiawan MEd, Head of PPPPTK Bahasa (Centre for Development & Empowerment of Language Teachers & Education Personnel), Indonesia. Ahmad Bahruddin, Komunitas Qaryah Thayyibah, Indonesia Souba Retsinamy, University of Malaysia Sarawak, Malaysia The Government’s introduction of a new school curriculum in Indonesia in 2013 has given rise to widespread discussion about the design of the curriculum, the way in which it was introduced and the role that teachers are expected to play in implementing it. Every year, the implementation of national examinations for SMP/MTs (junior secondary schools and madrasah), SMA/MA (senior secondary schools and madrasah) and SMK (senior vocational schools) also generates much debate in the media, in education institutions and among the general public. The questions asked include whether it is reasonable to have one standard set of examinations in a highly diverse country like Indonesia, whether examination results provide useful information about learners’ competence and whether the examinations are too stressful for everyone concerned. Overarching questions concern the relationships between the curriculum and assessment. In particular, how should the curriculum be reflected in the design of examinations and other forms of assessment? And how can examination results and assessment findings feed into curriculum renewal? The Conference will discuss these and other related issues in the context of language education (English, other foreign languages, Arabic, Bahasa Indonesia and Indonesian local languages). The Conference language is English. Proposals for papers and workshops are invited in the following areas: The teacher, the school and the curriculum (For example: What are teachers’ experiences with the 2013 curriculum so far? How have teachers and schools been helped to prepare for the new curriculum?) Innovation in the language curriculum (e.g. How was the new curriculum designed? Is it really possible to include character development in the language curriculum? Curriculum revolution or curriculum renewal? National- or school-based curriculum?) The British Council Institut Teknologi Bandung University of Leeds The teacher, the school and assessment (e.g. How can assessing learners’ language competence be done meaningfully? Should assessment be done nationally or at the school level? Links between assessment and the curriculum (e.g. How can language assessment reflect the curriculum? How can language assessment results be used to improve the curriculum? How can teachers use assessment results to improve their own teaching?) This event builds on the achievements of the nine previous conferences: 1995 Teaching English to University Undergraduates in the Indonesian Context: Issues and Developments 1997 English in High Schools and Universities in Indonesia: Bridging the Gap 2000 Testing and Evaluation in the Context of Undergraduate English Language Teaching in Indonesia 2002 Autonomy: Perspectives from the English Language Classroom, Challenges for English Language Teaching Organisations 2004 Teaching English to Young Learners: Why and How? 2006 Competency-Based English Teaching: Theory and Reality 2008 Teachers’ Competencies and Qualifications for ELT in Indonesia 2010 Internationalisation in Education: Implications for ELT in Indonesia 2012 Language, Development and Identity.
