THE EDUCATION PURPOSE, STRATEGIC AND GENERAL GOALS OF THE SCHOOL
MISSION STATEMENT
Burnside High School provides a modern and progressive learning environment where personal
commitment to achievement and concern for others are paramount.
Within this environment the school strives to model excellence and to help each student develop sound
personal and social values, academic potential, a range of artistic, cultural, sporting and leisure interests
and a preparation for life beyond the school.
Burnside High School will strive to ensure that each student within the large and varied population of
the school has the opportunity to gain fulfilment and develop a belief that education is of continuing
importance.
STRATEGIC GOALS
GOAL 1 STUDENT OUTCOMES
To foster students who are creative, energetic and enterprising and who are able to make a positive
contribution to New Zealand’s cultural, economic and environmental future. To develop in our students
the values, knowledge, competencies and confidence that will enable them to lead full and satisfying
lives.
Short to Medium Term Goals:

Continue to integrate the New Zealand Curriculum including principles, values and key
competencies into each faculty’s teaching programmes and schemes of work.

Support teaching programmes with a comprehensive range of assessment, marking, moderating
and reporting tools and systems.

Work towards the fully alignment of students - Level 2 and 3 NCEA.

Undertake a systematic and comprehensive analysis of student achievement at all levels linked
to teaching and learning. The aim being to:
(i) identify, adopt and inform good practice
(ii) identify and work towards eliminating practice which may be contributing to poor
achievement.

Develop a range of alternative pathways in the senior school for students.

Gather information on student achievement from a range of sources including National (e.g.
asTTle, NCEA) and school measures with a view to:
(i) identify student strengths and weaknesses
(ii) develop appropriate teaching programmes
(iii) predict and compare a student’s achievement outcomes.

Investigate and possibly adopt new options of reporting to students and parents regarding
student achievement, attendance, and levels of engagement which use current technologies
and reflect the new curriculum.

Further enhance the school’s career advice and course counselling capacity.

Further enhance the senior diploma and investigate the option of introducing a junior diploma.

Endeavour to lift the achievement of all students with particular attention to ‘boys’, ‘Maori’ and
‘Pasifika’ students.
GOAL 2 STAFF OUTCOMES
To develop and employ staff who are highly professional in all aspects of their work and in particular
teachers who are focused on the goal of helping students reach their potential, who are motivated and
inspirational and are leaders in terms of best educational practice. To provide an attractive and collegial
working environment that fosters and rewards excellence.
Short to Medium Term Goals:

Cement the new appraisal system with a view to providing improved advice, guidance, and
outcomes in terms of teaching practice.

Improve the links between school, departmental and individual goals and the systems,
procedures and practice of staff Professional Development in the school.

Create and offer a range of professional learning groups for staff.

Consider alternative options relating to some of the current support staff roles.
GOAL 3 FINANCIAL/PROPERTY
To prudently manage the school’s resources so as to meet the expectations of its Charter and the New
Zealand curriculum. To secure funds beyond the government ‘Operations Grant’ to provide
opportunities for all students to reach their potential. To maintain the school’s current site (buildings,
grounds and infrastructure) and provide a pleasant, healthy and safe learning environment. To seek
new and innovative solutions to the school’s property requirements to meet the challenges and the
needs of the New Zealand curriculum.
Short to Medium Term Goals:

Continue to upskill staff in terms of financial management and budgeting skills.

Investigate the needs of, and options relating to, our financial functions in terms of staffing,
systems and IT support.

Consider the establishment of a comprehensive fee for Year 9 and 10 students.

Develop the next 10-year property plan.
GOAL 4 CO-CURRICULAR LIFE OF THE SCHOOL
To provide students with a wide range of co-curricular opportunities and experiences to help them
realise their full potential both as learners and well-rounded New Zealanders. To encourage and
support staff and students to take part in the co-curricular programme at all levels of performance,
whether it be for the simple pleasure of participation, the satisfaction of setting and achieving personal
goals or the attainment of excellence at the elite level.
Short to Medium Term Goals:

Identify what financial and physical resources are needed in relation to sport and ‘The Arts’ so as
to lift participation and achievement across a range of extra-curricular activities.

Consider options with a view to increasing the opportunity for Year 9 and 10 students to be
involved in extra-curricular cultural pursuits.

Identify and adopt ways in which to further enhance the school’s ‘climate’.

Further enhance the Divisional competition concept.
GOAL 5 TREATY OF WAITANGI/THE SCHOOL’S MAORI DIMENSION
To develop in its staff and students an understanding of the special place of the Treaty of Waitangi in
modern New Zealand and have staff and students value and appreciate Te Reo Maori and Tikanga
Maori. As a particular goal, the school will seek and employ ways by which we can raise the
achievements of Maori students beyond national performance averages.
Short to Medium Term Goals:

Increase staff awareness of and understanding of the relevance of the Treaty to them and
Burnside High School/teaching and learning.

Endeavour to lift the achievement of Maori students through initiatives linked to He Kakano and
the Effective Teaching Profile (ETP).

Continue to develop student leadership and the cultural awareness of Maori students through
programmes within and beyond the school.

Expand the scope and effectiveness of the school Maori Achievement Focus Group.
GOAL 6 HEALTH AND SAFETY
To proactively develop and/or implement systems that ensure our students, staff and visitors enjoy a
safe physical and emotional environment and work practices that are consistent with a healthy life style.
Short to Medium Term Goals:

Confirm the current Health and Safety action plan and associated structure and systems.

Attendance monitoring systems and responses to be improved.
GOAL 7 CURRICULUM AND TEACHING TECHNOLOGIES
To direct student learning in accordance with the principles, vision and values of the New Zealand
curriculum and to promote excellent, innovative and modern teaching and learning practices, worldclass technologies and teaching/learning spaces.
Short to Medium Term Goals:

Continue to work towards the full integration of the New Zealand Curriculum including
principles, values and key competencies into each faculty’s teaching programmes and schemes
of work.

The 3-year ICT contract with the Ministry of Education will be advanced through to its final year.

Cement the introduction of the school’s new Student Management System (KAMAR)

Extend the use of MOODLE.
GOAL 8 SCHOOL SIZE AND STRUCTURE
To manage the school in accordance with enrolment regulations and in the best interest of our
community and to provide a divisional school structure that facilitates a concern for/care for/focus
on/treatment of/view of/needs of students as individuals.
Short to Medium Term Goals:

The enrolment scheme to be maintained.

The roll to remain stable at around 2,500 with a slight reduction to be considered over the next
2-3 years.
GOAL 9 PASTORAL CARE
To monitor and develop each individual student as far as possible, according to their particular needs,
aspirations and circumstances; encourage each individual to reach their potential; manage behaviour
and maximise learning outcomes; promote tolerance and develop an awareness and care for others; to
encourage personal commitment to achievement; and to provide guidance on life skills and appropriate
pathways to further learning or career development.
Short to Medium Term Goals:

Attendance monitoring systems and responses to be enhanced.

Introduce and monitor the effectiveness of the ‘fortnightly notes’ system.

Consider the introduction of a points system linked to student attendance, presentation,
academic effort and behaviour (both positive and negative) and link it to our SMS.

Consider the introduction of a junior diploma.
