Mandate
Whereas the title of Metis was recognized within the territory of the Gaspe Peninsula, Lower St-Lawrence
& Magdalen Islands Metis
Aboriginal Community from the 17th century and confirmed by the Royal Proclamation of 1763 in favour of the members of the

Whereas the title of Metis was still detained by the said historical community in 1850, at the time of the political and judicial takeover

I, the undersigned, mandate the Chief of the present day community and /or the Gaspe Peninsula, Lower St-Lawrence & Magdalen

PUBLIC INTEREST MESSAGE FOR THE METIS
Do you belong to the Gaspe Peninsula, Lower Saint-Lawrence & Magdalen Islands
Metis Aboriginal Community
The Gaspe Peninsula & Lower Saint-Lawrence Metis Aboriginal Community was officially registered on June 16 2006 under federal jurisdiction and has its
letters patent, charter and by-laws.
As such, the large Gaspesian Community has affirmed its presence among the other aboriginal communities in Canada. Article 35 of the Canadian
Constitutional Law (1982) states that aboriginal peoples include Indians, Inuits and Metis. And jurisprudence of the Supreme Court of Canada affirms that this
article confers the same fundamental rights to aboriginals, whether they have status or not.
The East Coast is the cradle of the historical Metis communities. Supported by written documents, the Supreme Court of Canada fixes the official arrival of the
Europeans on Atlantic beaches as May 1603 and consequently, cross breeding (officially) goes back to the year 1604. the aboriginal First Nations were the first
inhabitants of Canada. But, in 1850, only the Metis aboriginal people remained on the Gaspe Peninsula, both on and off reserves. Certain members of our
families chose to adopt the legal status of Indian and to live on reserves. The others, making up the immense majority, those issued from the historical Metis
communities (before 1850), continued using their own means to develop the Gaspe to its current state. The Gaspesian population is composed of 90% Metis
and who can claim this status.
The Gaspe Peninsula was not colonized or ceded to the Europeans who came to American soil. The Gaspe Peninsula remains the property of the descendants of
the first inhabitants, the First Nations: the Metis.
We should be proud of out origins and our traditions by being acknowledged for who we are. In order for the federal Court of Justice to recognize the status of
Metis, this person must:
1.
Declare that he/she is a Metis (auto identification)
2.
Show that he/she belongs to an existing Metis Community (contemporary)
3.
Prove that the current Metis Community of which is claims to be a member is the continuity of an historical Metis Community (that existed before
1850 to modern day)
Be wary! Register now as a member of the Gaspe Peninsula & Lower Saint-Lawrence Metis Aboriginal Community under the risk of being accused of
opportunism by a tribunal, following a judgement in favour of the Metis of the Gaspe Peninsula.
