Office Hours: Thursdays 12 noon – 1 pm
(PSME/ Math Center)
Other times by appointment, scheduled in advance by e-mail.
Prerequisite: Completion of Math 49 with a grade C or better.
Required Text: Discrete Mathematics with Applications by Susanna Epp, 3rd Edition,
ISBN # 0534359450.
Optional Text: Student’s Solutions Manual, ISBN # 0534360289. The manual
provides solutions to every third problem in the textbook. Warning, overuse or misuse of
the solutions manual can give you a false sense of comprehension of this material.
Required Calculator: You will need a TI calculator (TI 83, 83 plus or 84). You will be
using this calculator to assist you on your homework, quizzes and exams. I recommend
you get a TI 83 or TI 83 plus calculator, since it will be used for classroom
demonstrations. TI 92 and TI 89 calculators and other calculators capable of
symbolic manipulations are not allowed on quizzes or exams. This is a departmental
policy!
Attendance: Mathematics is a very demanding subject. Regular attendance is thus
essential for your success in this class. Any student who misses 3 classes in a row
without contacting me via e-mail, or 5 classes total, might be dropped from this class. If
you miss class for any reason, it is your responsibility to obtain the notes and/ or any
handouts you may have missed. Also, notify me via e-mail if you will miss class. Any
student who is tardy on a regular basis will be dropped from the class. If tardiness
becomes a problem, I will lock the door at the start of class.

1. Quizzes
There will be seven quizzes during the quarter. Your six highest quiz scores
will be added together to comprise your total quiz score grade. There are no make up
quizzes. If you miss a quiz for any reason, then you will receive zero points for that quiz.
Quizzes will be based on homework.
2. Exams
There will be three exams. There are no make up exams, even if the absence
is excused. If you miss one exam, then your final exam score will count for 47% of your
course grade. You are only allowed to miss one exam. Any additional exams missed
will given a zero score.
3. Homework
Each Monday I will give you a homework assignment, and you are expected
to do the entire assignment before the Friday class meeting. The homework
assignments will be collected, and 4 problems on it graded. Each Friday there will be a
short homework quiz, consisting of one to two homework problems assigned to you since
the last quiz. The solution must be written out completely and clearly, using proper
notation, in order to receive full credit. This is also true when taking quizzes and exams.
4. Final Exam
The final exam is comprehensive and will take place on Tuesday June 26, 10
am – 12 noon. You will be asked to show a PICTURE ID for the final exam.
How your Final Grade is Computed:
Your final course grade will be the better of the following:

Adding/Dropping:
Students will not be automatically dropped for nonattendance. I do reserve
the right to drop students for nonattendance. However, it is the student’s responsibility to
officially withdraw from the course. DO NOT assume that I will drop you if you stop
coming to class. Consequently, I suggest you pay strict attention to the drop dates listed
above. Students on the final grade roster who have not dropped, and who do not show up
for the final exam, automatically receive an F in the course.
Class Conduct:
Cheating is absolutely forbidden in my class. Looking at someone else’s
exam/quiz, helping another student during an exam/quiz, talking to anyone except me
during an exam/quiz, copying another student’s work , or using an external source of
information for which you were not explicitly given permission, will result in disciplinary
action. This disciplinary action might include anything from receiving 0 points on the
exam/quiz, to an F in the class. Cheating students will be reported to the Dean of Student
Affairs. If you do not understand what the word “cheating” means, please consult the
school brochure on academic honesty.
Final Grades:
Please do not ask me to change a final grade. I can only change a grade in
case of a clerical error.
Cell Phones:
I realize that many of you feel the need to stay connected at all times. If you
absolutely cannot turn off your cell phone during class, place your cell phone on vibrate
mode. If you receive a call, quietly step outside the classroom before answering the
phone. However, during a quiz or test, cell phones and pagers or any other electronic
gadgets will not be allowed.
Natural Disasters:
In the event that the campus is officially closed for any reason, write me an email, or call my voicemail at (650) 949-7999 x4460, for instructions.
Sources of Help:
One of the main reasons students may have trouble with a course is their
reluctance to obtain help when they need it. There are many sources of help for
everyone. I am your first source. I am willing to do whatever I can to help you with this
course. In addition to my office hours, I will often be in the math center before class. I
am also happy to arrange a time to get together upon request and a day’s notification via
e-mail. I will also try to answer questions you may have directly via e-mail. Tutorial
help is available in the Individual Study Center (ISC), through the Pass the Torch
study teams program, and the Math Center, which is regularly staffed with Foothill
Faculty members and trained instructional associates who are there to help you.
A Contract:
One purpose of this syllabus is to provide you with the guiding principles
upon which the class runs, and another is to make sure that you have at your fingertips,
answers to any questions which might arise. Please put this sheet in a safe place where
you can easily refer to it. Make sure you read it in its entirety before you ask me any
questions about the course. It is also a contract between you the student, and me, the
instructor of record. Make sure that you understand its contents fully, especially the parts
that pertain to testing and the computation of your grade, because so long as you remain
enrolled in the course, you are implicitly agreeing to abide by these terms.
GOOD LUCK!
