GENETICS QUIZ REVIEW (posted on 12/8/15) Students will get paper copy on 12/9 and 12/10 *****Vocabulary you’ll need to know for the 12/11 and 12/14 Genetics Quiz.***** Pages 230 to 244 are main pages to use for this review but you may use any of your book pages and also any notes we took in class on these topics. Genotype: an organism’s genetic makeup (BB, Bb, or bb for example) Phenotype: an organism’s outward appearance or physical appearance ( brown eyes or brown fur) Homozygous: Pair of identical alleles for a trait Heterozygous: Having 2 different alleles for a trait (BB or GG or bb or gg for example) (Bb or Gg for example) Dominant trait: masks recessive alleles or covers them up ; represented by a CAPITAL letter (A for example) Recessive trait: is masked by the dominant alleles; represented by a lower case letter (a for example) Know how to work a Punnett Square: (look at all the sheets we worked on for Punnett Squares and/or review in your textbook. Pages for Punnett Squares can be found in your table of contents.) For example: Dd x dd Dominant allele is dimples(D) Recessive allele is no dimples (d) Can you work this in a Punnett Square and tell the percentages of Homozygous, Heterozygous? Review the DNA molecule components: Adenine, Thymine, Guanine , Cytosine are nucleotide base pairs and make up the “rungs or steps” of the DNA molecule Adenine = A pairs with Thymine= T Guanine = (G) pairs with Cytosine= (C) Phosphates= (P) and Sugars = (S) make up the “sides” of the ladder model for DNA molecule
