Clark Street Intersection Improvement
On Monday, August 2, CDOT will start work on a large-scale
project to improve the intersection of Clark Street and
Roosevelt Road – one of the busiest on the Near South Side.
The project will reroute Clark underneath Roosevelt, while
maintaining full access to and from Roosevelt Road via
ramps. The design will help ease traffic congestion not only at
the intersection, but throughout the entire area. Additionally,
the new configuration will help reduce accidents and increase
safety for both motorists and pedestrians.
At the start of the project, Clark Street will be completely closed from Polk to 15th Streets.
The Challenge: The Near South Side has grown exponentially over the past decade. New
residential and commercial development has created more traffic, and future proposed
development will bring additional vehicles.



Currently, about 4,900 cars pass through the intersection during each rush hour.
By 2010, that number is expected to rise to 6,300
About 60,000 cars pass through the intersection on an average weekday.
Adding to the challenge, the Clark Street viaducts, originally built in 1921, are experiencing the
effects of weather and aging.
The Solution: The project calls for:



Three lanes of through-traffic on Clark (two southbound, one northbound)
Ramps on either side of northbound and southbound Clark to allow access to and from
Roosevelt,
Landscaping, including new trees and shrubs
The project is part of the Roosevelt Road Corridor Improvement Program, a strategic plan to
meet the traffic, transportation and access needs of the area. The 10-year program includes
several projects to improve Roosevelt Road – one of the Near South Side’s main arteries – and
several nearby streets.
Traffic impacts: Clark Street – will be completely closed to traffic from Polk to 15th Street.
Detour: State Street is the designated detour. Alternate routes: Canal Street, Wabash Avenue
and Michigan Avenue are the best alternate routes. Roosevelt Road – will remain open to all
traffic.
Project Completion : Clark Street will reopen in Spring 2005. The entire project will be complete
by June 2005.
