Total number of cosmetic minimally-invasive procedures covering fourteen (14) different types grew to an
astounding 2,000,000 in 2004 and has experienced growth of 2,805% since 1992.
Total U.S.
expenditures in 2004 came to a staggering $3.3 billion.
Market Demographics
A majority of the cosmetic enhancements in the year 2003 still belonged to women. 7.4 million
women (86% of all enhancements) simply dwarfed the 1.2 million men who decided to have a
procedure. Both genders increased their respective number of operations by about 30% from the
previous year.
Both sexes preferred Botox as the top non-invasive procedure. Of all patients, the biggest age
group to pursue a cosmetic enhancement was between 35-50 years of age. They made up
almost half of all cosmetic enhancement patients.
As well, half of the year's cosmetic
enhancement patients were repeat patients. A third of all patients also had multiple procedures
done in one session.
FUTURE PROCEDURE GROWTH
Market Trends
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, who tracks all cosmetic surgical
procedures and cosmetic minimally-invasive procedures, the number of non-invasive procedures
will continue to increase 30-38% per year.

PROCEDURES
Effective Treatments
• Botox® • Restylane® • Facials • Chemical peels • Microdermabrasion
• Laser skin resurfacing • Laser hair removal • Spider veins
• Pigmentation problems • Acne care • Rosacea
Botox®
Botox, or botulism toxin, is one of the most widely used procedures in derma care today. Botox
produces its effect by paralyzing voluntary muscles. Botox was first used over ten years ago in
treating diseases of the muscle of the eye. While collagen and other filler substances are used to
fill in static lines, that is, the permanent lines in the skin, Botox, by paralyzing the muscle, works in
treating lines caused by the movement of muscles in the underlying skin.
For many Laser Derma Care Center patients, Botox has produced extremely satisfying results in
reducing lines of the forehead, crow's feet lines, and the furrows in the forehead and frown lines
between the eyes. Recently the use of Botox has been extended for use in relaxing muscle bands
in the neck and lines around the mouth.
Restylane®
Restylane is the first and only FDA-approved dermal filler made of a biodegradable non-animal
stabilized hyaluronic acid (NASHA(TM)). Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in all living
organisms and provides volume and fullness to the skin.
Restylane is formulated as a clear gel and uses a dual mechanism of action to correct wrinkles
and folds. Upon being injected by your Laser Derma Care Center physician beneath the skin's
surface, the NASHA gel adds natural volume and lift to smooth wrinkles and folds. The NASHA
gel integrates into dermal tissue then attracts and binds to water molecules to help maintain
volume. Restylane is gradually degraded by the body's own mechanism and disappears without
any residue. Results can be seen immediately following treatment and last six months, or even
longer. The amount of Restylane used during your treatment depends on the desired correction.
Facials
It is proven that a regular regime of skin care including professionally performed facials,
drastically reduce fine lines and wrinkles associated with the aging process. Skin-nourishing,
tension-dissolving creams massaged onto neck and shoulders, followed by a skin-softening
steam to prep the face for a gentle extraction of impurities. The Laser Derma Care professional
will then finish with an application of a pore-tightening, skin-smoothing masque customized for
your skin type.
Chemical Peel
Chemical peels have been used in dermatology and plastic surgery for many decades. These
peels can be classified as light peel, medium-depth peels, or deep peels.
Light peels are
sometimes referred to as the so-called lunchtime peel, in which a patient can be treated by your
Laser Derma Care Center medical technician on a lunch break.
Generally, a buffered hydroxy acid peel of different concentrations is applied to the skin,
sometimes in combination with different agents such as salicylic acid or Jessner's solution, which
is a combination of salicylic acid, lactic acid, and resorcinol. Depending on the particular
combination used, the patient can often return to the office or a social engagement with only very
slight or moderate redness.
Micro-dermabrasion
A very widely used technique to revitalize the skin is Micro-dermabrasion. This technique uses
small particles, usually aluminum oxide or sodium chloride crystals, which are delivered to the
skin under positive pressure, causing a superficial sanding of the face.
The effect produced by Micro-dermabrasion is much more superficial than either laser or
dermabrasion, but has the advantages of being essentially painless, and therefore not requiring
any anesthesia.
With the care of a Laser Derma Care Center medical professional, Micro-dermabrasion gives the
gratification of producing immediate improved smoothness of the skin with only minimal redness,
and not requiring any prolonged recovery. However, as with some of the other techniques
described, because the damage to the skin is so superficial, Micro-dermabrasion does not
destroy deep acne scars. Combined with the at home use of retinoic acid, alpha-hydroxy acid and
Vitamin-C, repeated treatments can bring about a marked improvement in skin smoothness and
color.
Laser Skin Resurfacing
In dermatology, lasers add another dimension for the treatment of skin diseases. Laser resurfacing can
improve cosmetic flaws, such as wrinkles, scars, and sun damage, and is the latest scientific
breakthrough in skin rejuvenation. Lasers (short for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of
Radiation) work by producing an intense beam of light that travels in one direction. This beam can gently
ablate skin tissue to improve wrinkles, scars or blemishes. In addition, lasers can also be used to destroy
visible blood vessels or to cut skin tissue. Using a laser hand piece, undesired skin cells and wrinkles
disappear and are replaced by fresh skin cells. One of the laser's most significant advantages over
traditional techniques for skin resurfacing is that treatment is relatively bloodless. This procedure also
offers increased degree of precision and safety in treating delicate areas.
It is important to understand the limitations of skin resurfacing using lasers. The laser is not a substitute
for a facelift, nor can the procedure eliminate excessive skin. However, by tightening loose skin, laser
resurfacing can improve certain folds and creases. More importantly, laser resurfacing offers an
alternative to traditional resurfacing (dermabrasion) and can also work well in conjunction with other
cosmetic skin procedures such as chemical peels.
The final result of laser resurfacing can take up to six months to fully appear. These results are long-lasting, but not
permanent. Some people will require re-treatments over the years. Protection from the sun and the institution of a
good skin-care regime can help in maintaining a rejuvenated look.
Laser Hair Removal
Laser Derma Care Center uses a low-energy laser to gently remove unwanted hair, putting an end to
routine shaving and waxing. This advanced technology transcends the older, painful hair removal
treatments to deliver long-lasting results. Because the laser treats more than one hair at a time, it is
possible to treat larger areas such as the back, shoulders, arms, legs and face.
Laser treatments leave your skin looking and feeling smoother and silkier. Best of all, laser hair removal
treatments are a safe, fast, gentle, and effective alternative method for hair removal.
The laser slows the growing capacity of follicles in the growth cycle at the time of the treatment. Since
some hair follicles may enter their growth cycle after your treatment, multiple treatments may be required
to deliver optimal results. Treatment results will vary from patient to patient depending on skin and hair
color.
Spider Vein Removal
The request for Laser Derma Care Center physicians to treat spider veins with sclerotherapy is
increasing rapidly. In this rather simple procedure, veins are injected with a sclerosing solution,
which causes them to collapse and fade from view. The procedure may also remedy the
bothersome symptoms associated with spider veins, including aching, burning, swelling and night
cramps.
Although this procedure has been used in Europe for more than 50 years, it has only become
popular in the United States during the past decade. The introduction of sclerosing agents that
are mild enough to be used in small veins has made sclerotherapy predictable and relatively
painless.
Acne Treatment
For reasons no one completely understands, follicles, often called pores, sometimes get blocked.
Sebum (oil) which normally drains to the surface gets blocked and bacteria begins to grow. Both
whiteheads and blackheads start out as a "microcomedone". Microcomedones become skin
blemishes called comedones-either a whitehead or a blackhead. Either way, blackheads and
whiteheads are filled with trapped sebum and bacteria. The treatment advice for how to get rid of
blackheads and how to get rid of whiteheads depends on the severity of your condition. With so many
factors affecting clearance and a multitude of treatment options available (some only by prescription),
intervention from the Laser Derma Care Center professionals will make a difference. Before
prescribing treatment, the LDCC technician will consider several factors, including the severity of the
acne, types of lesions present, co-existing conditions, as well as the patient’s age, skin type, lifestyle
and motivation.
The knowledge gained from considering these factors allows your LDCC technician to create effective
an individualized therapy that will resolve the patient’s acne over time and prevent new lesions from
forming.
Sometimes we may combine two or more treatment options. A patient may be instructed to use one
medication in the morning and the other at night. Or, two medications may be combined in one
prescription medication. Due to possible side effects, over-the-counter medications should not be
combined unless directed by your LDCC medical staff.
Acne responds especially well to early treatment. The professionals at Laser Derma Care Center are
here to help you with all your acne treatment needs and recommend that acne be treated early to
maximize effectiveness as well as help prevent scarring.
Rosacea
Rosacea can cause redness, bumps and/or swelling, especially on the nose, cheeks, forehead, and chin
and can look similar to acne. Unlike acne, however, people with Rosacea don’t get blackheads but do get
dilated blood vessels.
Rosacea is a chronic condition and rarely resolves without treatment. Mild Rosacea can be limited to mild
redness of the cheeks. However, in the most severe forms, the skin overlying the nose can become
permanently swollen and red (called rhinophyma) because of dilated blood vessels and abnormal
enlargement of oil glands. Other potential symptoms of Rosacea include eye irritation (burning, stinging,
grittiness, and/or dryness) and sties.
Rosacea treatment options vary widely, depending on symptoms. Facial redness and acne-like lesions
are often treated with oral antibiotics and topical medications. The more severe forms of Rosacea also
have a variety of treatment options. Your Laser Derma Care Center physician can discuss your individual
concerns about treatment.
