Website: www.rbvrrwomenscollege.net Raja Bahadur Venkata Rama Reddy Women’s College(popularly known as Reddy College) was established in the year 1954, by Hyderabad Mahila Vidya Sangam.This college is named after the great visionary and social Reformer Sri Raja BahadurVenkata Rama Reddy who took the initial step in the direction of establishing a college for women.The foundation stone for the college building was laid by the First Prime Minister of India , Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and the building was inaugurated by the then President of India, Dr. Sarvepally Radha Krishnan.The college hostel was inaugurated by Smt. Indira Gandhi in the year 1965.His excellency, the then President of India Dr. A.P.J. Adbul Kalam graced the Golden Jubilee Valedictory function in the year 2005. Veterans like Sri. Konda Venkata Ranga Reddy , Padma Bhushan Madapati Hanumanth Rao, Sri. P. Rama Chandra Reddy, Prof .P. Narsimha Reddy and several others were associated with the progress and development of this college from time to time. The college is centrally located in the city on a campus comprising 3.5 acres of land with adequate infrastructural facilities to accommodate both UG and PG programmes in Physical and Life Sciences, Social Sciences, Commerce and Management. The college which started with 59 students in the year 1954 has grown to a strength of 1600 students. The growth and expansion over the last 5 decades has been smooth , as the College Management and Staff has brought in need - based changes keeping in view the Vision and Mission and emerging demands of student requirements. The curriculum is redesigned and several new academic programmes are introduced under autonomy. Establishment of Model Classroom with latest technology to enliven teaching and learning. Upgrading classroom facilities and enhancing student centric learning measures such as guest lectures, seminars, access to internet, audio visual aids, multimedia and tie-up with other learning centers. Establishment of Centralized Research facilities for chemical, physical, life, commerce and social sciences. Strengthening of the existing language and communication skill laboratory. Establishing equal opportunity centre and organizing Need Based Training programmes Need based training activities to the target groups for teaching faculty, non teaching and support staff. Establishing career and counseling center for the benefit of students. Establishing knowledge resource center by obtaining e-journal access, creating/procuring study material, PowerPoint presentations, interactive animated concepts, etc. Outcome The existing labs have been refurbished and upgraded. The Model Classroom has been established and the facilities will be made available to the students. The process has begun Work is in progress with regard to the establishment of the required research facilities. Necessary equipment is being procured and linkages are being established. The technology is upgraded and additional measures are taken up. The center has been established and training programmes are organized catering to the needs of backward classes and weaker section students and staff of the college. The training for target groups is being taken up by the management and IQAC. The career and counseling unit is established. The process has begun, necessary linkages are being established and the existing library facilities are being upgraded. 4 Section –B Activities Reflecting Goals & Objectives of the Institution Keeping in view the Vision and Mission of the institution a number of academic and related activities were taken up during the academic year to build confidence among the students. Infrastructural and support facilities were enhanced which include access to computer labs, physical, chemical and life sciences labs, language lab, library, reading room and need - based support provided by the faculty. The library was updated and many audio-visual aids have been acquired to facilitate the students to enhance their academic inputs and equip them for getting a competitive edge. Many of our final year students secured Placements through the college placement cell. Further students have registered in the employment portals. Students were encouraged to showcase their talents through an exhibition organized by the student leaders. This program helped in identifying the latent talents of students and also helped to create “Talent Pools”. This activity was taken up on 10th February 2011 in the college Auditorium. Class-wise performances, innovative and creative abilities in Basket weaving, painting, Hand Embroidery, Miniature painting, recycling of waste-material, paper flowers, bouquets and costume jewellery were displayed with great enthusiasm by the students. The same was appreciated by the management and staff of the college and also helped a better understanding of the students’ abilities. A lecture demonstration on classical Carnatic music by “Bombay Sisters” was arranged in collaboration with SPIC MACAY on 18th September 2010 in the college Auditorium. This helped the students in getting awareness about the facilities available from experts for honing their skills at reasonable cost. The college has established Value Educational Centre to provide guidance to the students. Apart from that, the management takes keen interest in inviting key persons to deliver lectures and interact with the students. Some of the initiatives taken up during the year include collaboration with Centre for Human ExcellenceRama Krishna Mutt, J. Krishnamurti Foundation and Patanjali Yogpeeth. The value education in the college is seen as an integral part of the academics and is considered as a valuable tool for the holistic development of the students. New Academic Programmes Initiated (UG and PG): New academic programmes initiated during the year 2010-11 for meeting the changing educational scenario include: The Department of Physics started a certificate course on “Renewable Energy Application” for the B.Sc final year students (with Physics as optional) with a duration of 4 weeks. 56 students successfully completed the first batch. 5 The Department of English has initiated the process to start a short term certificate course of 3 months duration on “Media and Theatre” for all the students. The Department of Telugu has conducted a workshop with a view to prepare syllabi and motivate the students to opt for a Certificate course on “T.V Anchoring and News Reading in Telugu”. The Department of Commerce has started an additional section for B.Com Computers. Community Services: The Dept of Physics has signed an MOU with ALAMA International for ABACUS training to school children. Ms. Sreedevi, Lecturer, Department of Physics, is training V standard students of Madapati Hanumanth Rao High School, Narayanguda, Hyderabad. The Course will be completed by the end of March 31st ,2011. The Consumer Co-operative Stores of the college markets products of Manasa- An NGO for differently abled children. The food supplements and products of Patanjali Yogpeeth are marketed through the stores. The sarees and dress materials from Mahamayi Cooperative Society- Pochampally, products from an NGO –Swadeshi Jagaran Manch working for improving the livelihood of weaving community of Dubbaka are also marketed. The proceeds are sent back to the respective NGOs Apart from that, a number of community service initiatives have been taken up by the institution. The same is analyzed and discussed with the departmental heads and the concerned teachers for necessary action. The students’ concerns regarding the facilities are addressed through appropriate measures. 8 Feedback from Stakeholders Feedback is obtained from the stakeholders which include Parents, Academic peers, Alumni, Industry and Community leaders through interactive meetings. Apart from that, feedback on the course content was obtained and discussed with the academic peers and examiners visiting the college in the departmental meetings. The suggestions given by the examiners, academic peers, students and other stakeholders were taken into consideration. Administration and the process of Admission and Examination results, issue of certificates are computerized. Plans for upgradation from the existing software to a more advanced technology are being negotiated with professionals from the relevant fields. Increase in infrastructural facilities and Technology upgradation The existing facilities have been improvised and new facilities created. The details are given in Annexure-I Computer and Internet access and training to teachers, non-teaching staff and students The departments are provided with computers and printers with internet access. Some of the departments have exclusive labs to meet the requirements of the students. The students can access the Internet free of cost and use the computer facility. A Training Programme for Telugu medium students on “Internet Awareness and Applications” was organized from January 2011 to March 2011. 150 students of B.Com participated in the training programme. A Training Programme on “Internet Access” for the staff members was organized on 25th March, 2011. 100 Staff members benefited. A group called “RBVRR Women’s College Family” was created in a social networking site for enabling more members to join the association. Free Dermatology and Dental Camps for staff and students were organized during the months of September and December with the help of Dr. Sumanth (M.D.S in Prosthodontics) and his team. Apart from that, the association awards gold medals and cash prizes to meritorious students for self financing courses in Commerce and Sciences. Further, the alumni contribute to the developmental activities through donations. Activities and support from the Parent –Teacher Association: Parent teacher meetings are held during admissions, disbursement of scholarships, issue of hall tickets and declaration of results. These meetings were held during the months of June, August, September, November and February 2011. 10 These meetings provided a platform for the parents to interact with the staff and know about the progress and special needs of their wards. They were given handouts which contain detailed information about the academic, curricular, co-curricular and extra curricular activities and the various facilities available. Apart from that, once in a week parents interact with the staff to discuss the problems and special needs of their children through prior appointment. Health Services The Health Centre established in the college is highly beneficial to the students, staff and resident scholars. The services of the doctor and also the Hospital with which the college has an MOU are utilized by the needy. The doctor is available in the campus and attends to the health needs, conducts medical examination for the day and resident scholars and submits the report on a regular basis. The doctor attends on an average 30 members daily in the Health Center. Performance in Sports Activities Sports in the college is as old as the college itself. It is an integral part of the academics as regular games and sports sessions, training programmes and competitions are taken up. Coaching is given to the students and the staff in Chess, Volley ball, Table tennis, Kabbaddi and Martial Arts (Karate). Annual Sports Day was held on 26 February 2011. Prizes were distributed to the students. A breath taking Karate display by the Martial Arts trainees enthralled the large gathering comprising of management, staff, parents, students and the electronic media. Miss. Eswaramma of B.Com Computers I year received Gold Medal in Hammer throw at Inter College Tournament conducted by the Osmania University. She was also the proud winner of Gold and Silver medals in 10 events including Inter-district and Inter college tournaments. She has been adjudged as the Best Sports Girl for the year 2010-11. Incentives to outstanding sports persons 2010-11 A Merit scholarship has been awarded to Miss. Eswaramma of B.Com Computer I year. Students Achievements and Awards Miss. Jashma Jaithri Das from B.A II year was awarded a certificate of appreciation for her essay on ‘From Ambition To aspiration, From Acquiring To Becoming.’, organized by Sri Rama Chandra Mission in collaboration with the United Nations Information center for India and Bhutan. 11 Participation In N.C.C. Sowbhagyawathi attended an Advance leadership Camp in Bihar. CDT Navitha and CDT Dilleshwari attended a National Integration Camp at Delhi. SGT G. Swapna, CDT Banu Rekha and CDT D. Meera Rathod attended a National Integration Camp at Kerala. CDT. Navitha, CDT. Dilleshwari, CDT. S.Vani & CDT. Y. Mounika participated in a National Integration Camp at Kakinada. Activities of the Guidance and Counseling Unit The counseling committee of the college comprises of the senior faculty. 30 students are assigned to each teacher who are mentors for guiding the students and to take up the identified activities of the counseling committee. Guidance and counseling was provided by the mentors to the students during admissions (June 2010), prior to internal assessments (August 2010 and February 2011) and semester examinations (September 2010 and February 2011). Mentors also counsel for stress management and provide emotional support on a regular basis. Regular training programmes viz.: workshops, lectures, seminars and interactive sessions are organized by the committee for the benefit of the mentors and students. The support staff who have discontinued their education were identified and counseled to complete their examinations. They were also encouraged to take up skill building activities to supplement additional income and hone their skills. Placement services provided to students A Career and Counseling Unit established in the college organizes on a regular basis lectures, interactive sessions, awareness programmes, seminars and workshops to provide information related to the career and employment opportunities and training facilities for the benefit of the students. Compulsory Certificate Courses on Personality Development, Communicative English and Training for Employability are offered to the UG students. Special focus is given for providing placement services to SC, ST, OBC and Minority students. Books and reading material useful for appearing in competitive examinations are provided free of cost. Campus placements were arranged in the months of December 2010 and January 2011. 72 percent of the eligible students participated in the pre recruitment training programme. 12 Development Programmes for Non-teaching staff ‘Employees State Insurance Scheme’ is implemented for all non teaching and support staff from the year 2010-11. Good Practices of the institution Teaching-Learning And Evaluation In case of deaf and dumb students special consideration is given in some subjects and scribes are provided for the visually and physically challenged students. External squad members were recruited to maintain the objectivity in the process of examination. Remedial classes are arranged for the slow learners and tutorials are held in selected subjects. Advanced learners are encouraged to take up projects. Students are encouraged to develop competitive spirit and leadership qualities. Students are motivated to pursue professional programmes, take up skill building activities to prepare them for self employment. Research, Consultancy and Extension: Management provides Seed Money for pursuing doctoral research for unaided teaching staff. Some of the departments take-up out reach programs in collaboration with national and international organizations. Value education through yoga and pranayama is provided to the community members by some of the staff members. Awareness on total health management is provided in the neighbourhood by the staff. Student Support and Progression: College has adopted new best practices during 2010-11 besides continuing the earlier practices. Non – Scholarship toppers are given financial support by the management. Established an equal opportunity centre. Career and counseling Unit. English language lab helps majority of the degree students in improving their communication skills in a very systematic and structured manner. The focus is on listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Audio-visual aids are used effectively in learning English especially for the Telugu medium students. Other Good Practices: Alternative energy utilization Screening of educational films and videos. 13 Section - C Curricular Aspects The college offers 27 programmes of which 23 are at UG level and 4 at P.G. level. The innovative design of the curriculum update initiated during 2009-10 is continued. Best Practices in curriculum aspects: Feedback from the students on course content is introduced during 2010-11 in order to bring innovations in curricular design and transaction. Teaching, learning & Evaluation Admissions in the under graduate courses are strictly made on the basis of merit and the policy of inclusion is followed. Most of the students are however from the backward rural regions of the state. 60% of the total seats in all UG courses are allotted for them. Post graduate admissions are centralized by the Osmania University. Backlog examinations for the outgoing students are conducted once in a year. Practical examination is conducted annually by internal and external examiners, selected from the Panel approved by the Boards of Studies of the respective departments. The system of Internal assessment with a weightage of 20% marks per semester is continued. Paper setting and valuation is done by external examiners selected from the approved panel for the semester examinations. The results are completely processed by the staff of the examination branch of the college. Absolute confidentiality is maintained throughout the process of the examination. All the necessary arrangements for the smooth conduct of examinations are made by the examination branch. External squad members are recruited to maintain the objectivity in the process of examinations. The results are processed using the FOXPRO software and presented for approval to the Results Committee comprising Controller, Additional Controller of Examinations Osmania University, Controller, Additional Controller of Examinations of the college, Honorary Secretary, Director, Principal, Vice-Principal of the college and all the Heads of the departments. Results are displayed after the Committees’ approval on the college notice board and also in the college website. Results were announced on 17-06-2010 within 30 days after the completion of the II ,IV and VI Semester exams and on 9-12-10 after the completion of I, III and V semester exams. Special care is taken by the science departments to extend extra teaching and practical training facilities to students who miss their regular classes while attending NCC camps and other sports activities. All the departments maintain their departmental libraries and also lend the books to the needy students throughout the year. External squad members are recruited to maintain the objectivity in the conduct of examination. Remedial classes are conducted for the slow learners. Tutorials are arranged for the benefit of the students in the departments of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Computer Science. Coaching classes are conducted for all S.C., S.T., O.B.C, E.B.C and Minority students throughout the year. An exclusive computer lab has been established for the Commerce department. Library: There are 47,000 volumes in the Library. It is updated each year by purchasing new books, periodicals and e-journals. The U G Library Reference and Magazine section can accommodate around 100 students at a time. The M.B.A Library can accommodate 60 students. The library has a wide collection of National and International Journals, books, Newspapers, back volumes of periodicals and reference books. It also provides Digital Library facility and a ‘Discussion Room’. A Book Bank is also maintained for better utilization of the library facilities. ICT as learning Resource: Students have free access to Internet connection in the departments, Library and all computer labs. Slots are created in the college time table to facilitate the students to use the Internet for class work and for any other extra information. Students are encouraged to do project work by using the ICT facility and present seminars. Other Facilities: The Consumer Co-operative society continues to be managed by the Department of Commerce. Stationary and Consumer items are available in the store for the benefit of resident and day Scholars and the Staff. The college Gym is popular among staff and students. The Health centre in the College provides basic facilities to the staff and students. It is now equipped with new and useful equipments. Rs. 75,000 was spent for the health center this year. 22 Section-D Future Plans Introduction of New Courses: It is proposed to introduce M.Sc -Analytical Chemistry, M.S.W and M.Sc - Nano Technology. It is also proposed to initiate certificate courses on Gemology, Front Office Management, Interior Designing, Event Management, Multimedia Course and Animation, International Taxation, Craft Courses, Library Science and a course in Physical Education. Publication: Departments of English, Physics, Sociology, and Commerce are planning to bring out text books for meeting the requirements of undergraduate students in Telugu and English Medium. It is proposed to publish a Research Journal and News letter. Infrastructural Facilities It is proposed to take up construction of a few class rooms to meet the growth and development needs of the institution. Some of the existing class rooms will be refurbished. Additional Staff rooms with work stations are proposed. Separate cubicles will be provided in the Library for serious learners. It is planned to lay track and Basket Ball Courts with movable polls for conducting sports events.
