NORTHERN VALLEY REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL FILE CODE: 6145.6 Demarest, New Jersey Policy AWARDS It is important for students to identify with, be loyal to and have pride in representing their high school. The status of earning a “varsity letter” should be attainable by all students. The “Varsity Chenille Letter” represents the highest award a student can receive from his/her high school. Whether it is for participation in athletics, clubs, marching band or theater it recognizes that a student has made a significant contribution to Northern Valley. Students earning this award must demonstrate leadership, teamwork, respect, integrity, commitment, responsibility and citizenship and meet the following requirements: A. Varsity Athletic Letter A student may earn a varsity letter by participating in a varsity sport though criteria determined by the coach and athletic director. In the event an athlete earns a second letter in another sport or activity in the same year, or a second letter in the same sport or activity in a different year, the student will be awarded a certificate. B. Varsity Music/Theater Letter A student may earn a varsity letter by participating in the music activities of the district vocal, instrumental or theater programs through criteria determined by the activity director and approved by the principal (e.g. 3 years marching band, choir, All-School Musical). A student earning a second letter in music, sport or another activity in the same year or a different year will be awarded a certificate. C. Varsity Extracurricular/Activities Letter A student may earn a varsity letter by participating in a “club” or other school activity/program which represents the district in performances, competition or involves civics and/or student government and meets the high standards of rigor (i.e., 200 hours of time), effort and commitment of other varsity letter activities. The time requirement may be waived by the principal or superintendent. The designation must be approved by the principal, superintendent and board of education. The criteria for a varsity letter shall be determined by the activity advisor and approved by the principal. A student earning a second letter in another activity or sport in the same year or in a different year will be awarded a certificate. Each year, the advisor will submit to the principal a statement that identifies the requirements for earning the varsity letter. Presentation of the Award The presentation of the award will be determined by the director of the specific program. The athletic award will be presented by the athletic department or at an awards presentation. The music and activities award will be presented by the advisor or at an awards presentation. Recognition of this award will not be included in the student transcripts as is consistent, with current Northern Valley practice. However, students may indicate in their applications or college essay of this award. The board of education will purchase the Varsity Chenilles Letters necessary. Students may purchase a varsity letter jacket with an appropriate symbol of recognition at their own expense.
