ART “CAN” DO IT A can sculpture contest to benefit the local food banks. Teams will build sculptures, which will be on display November 9-11, 2012. Application Deadline: September 1, 2012 RULES & REGULATIONS Awards (as there are enough teams) o Best Meal o Best Use of Label o Juror’s Choice o People’s Choice Structure Size o 10’W x 10’L x 8’ H Teams o Maximum five (5) during construction. Any number of people can assist in the design and planning of the structure. Only 5 people will be permitted to build at one time. o There will be a limited about of teams due to space. Teams will be accepted on a first come first serve basis. Food Products o Aluminum food cans of all sizes may be used. If using plastic containers make sure they stack and can take the pressure of cans from above bearing down. o No glass containers o No alcoholic beverages o Soda and junk food strongly discouraged. Food banks need nutritional food, not junk food. Make every effort in designing a structure that uses edible, nutritious foods. o Canned food must be full and unopened, no exposed food. o Labels must be intact and legible. Labels cannot be covered over, stripped off or altered in any way. Additional building materials: Structures MUST be structurally self-supporting. o Foam-core, cardboard, masonite, plywood, plexi-glass o Threaded Rod o Cardboard Tubes o Tape o Rubber bands o Nylon String o Tie-Backs o Plywood/masonite template for even flooring – essential if building on uneven flooring. Not Permissible o 2x4’s o Half inch plywood o Half inch thick tubing o Sheet Metal o Permanent Adhesives Acquisition of Canned Goods o Participating teams are responsible for obtaining their own supply of canned goods. o The competition is not a 501(c)3 not-for profit charity. You may want to promote to businesses that their contribution can be used as a marketing/public relation’s expense. All donors will be acknowledged on sculpture related signage. o Teams may solicit canned goods and/or financial donations from food manufacturers, grocery stores, business consultants, contractors, vendors, and employee/student food drives. o Cans should be packed in sturdy boxes and labeled with team name. o Cans are ONLY to be delivered on Tuesday November 6 or Wednesday November 7, 2012 between 10 AM and 5 PM. o Save all packing boxes. Boxes must be used to repack cans at the end of the competition. Bring additional packing boxes to the Chaffee for de-construction. SIGNAGE & TEXT DEADLINE- Absolutely no later than: October 28, 2012 Email as a WORD document to info@chaffeeartcenter.org Please Submit in the Following Order TEAM NAME – the way it should appear in print. TITLE OF ENTRY DESCRIPTION of the structure. Keep to one paragraph, spell check. TEAM MEMBERS – list all members who participated in the project THANK YOU’S for any sponsors who participated. (If you are receiving major support from a food manufacturer or grocery store and need to display a sign with their logo, please include that in your word document, or send separately as a JPEG or PDF. CAN INFORMATION Please include the following information in an excel document labeled with your team name and include it in the email with your signage and text: Name of each food product Quantity of each food product Total number of cans Total cost whether purchased or donated CONSTRUCTION Cans may be delivered on Tuesday November 6th or Wednesday November 7th between 10 AM and 5 PM. Wednesday November 7th, teams may meet at the Chaffee Art Center, between 10 AM and 5 PM to prep for construction. Construction begins on Thursday November 8th from 10 AM to 9 PM. Construction must be finished by 9 PM, no exceptions. Try to do as much prefabrication of any templates, foam-core or other materials your require prior to the day of construction. If you have a chance to do a practice build, take that opportunity to lessen surprises at the site. Bring plenty of extra supplies (tape, scissors, foam-core, cardboard) – over estimate. Bring a ladder if you are building tall. Bring plenty of food and beverages for the team. Boxes must be saved for repackaging at the end of the event. Make sure your structure is standing the next morning. The Chaffee will call you if your structure looks like it is unsound, sagging, slipping etc. Be prepared to fix it immediately. If rebuilding is impossible box cans up. JUDGING Judging will be held on Saturday November 10th, 2012. Be prepared to rebuild anything that has fallen. The public can vote on the people’s choice award November 9 & 10. 10 AM to 5 PM and Sunday November 11 10 AM to 12 PM. AWARDS CEREMONY An awards ceremony and reception will take place on Sunday November 11, 2012. It is good for some team members to be at your structure to welcome everyone and answer questions regarding the design and construction. We encourage you to invite your team sponsors. DECONSTRUCTION Deconstruction will take place on Sunday November 11, 4-8 PM. Each entry must be taken down and packed into boxes for pickup. You should allow ample time. Cans will be delivered to local food shelves benefitting the towns from where the teams originated.
