WINTER/SPRING 2011 COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASSES
1. WOODCARVING
Course Description: Introduction to power wood carving using dremel rotary tools. Students will
carve a Killdeer (Shorebird), as well as learn texturing, preparation and painting their project. The
instructor has over thirty years of carving experience and has taught over 800 people the art of wood
carving.

2. OIL AND ACRYLIC PAINTING
Course Description: Learn to use your own photos to create paintings in oil or acrylics. Learn to
mix beautiful natural looking colors. You will also learn to compose paintings. Individual
instruction is included in every class. Bring your favorite photos and painting supplies to the first
class. Painting supplies are provided by students. A supply list will be sent upon registration.

3. WATERCOLOR PAINTING
Course Description: Enjoy learning to paint wonderful watercolors. Learn color mixing, flowing
wet-in-wet colors, painting color washes and creating special effects. Learn to compose and design a
successful painting. There will be a demonstration every class. Individualized instruction will be a
part of every class. Painting supplies are provided by students. A supply list will be sent upon
registration.

4. TRANSPARENT WATERCOLOR
Course Description: Transparent watercolor produces beautiful dramatic effects like no other
medium can. In this class you’ll learn new techniques each week while painting along with the
instructor. We will explore how to get layers of depth and colorful shadows into your painting.
We’ll discover how to create flowing washes and how to mix color right on the paper. We’ll see how
to create a variety of textures and effects by varying the use of water and using common household
items as painting tools. The classes will be fun and will reward you with skills that you can use for a
lifetime. A supply list will be sent upon registration.

5. PENCIL AND PASTEL DRAWING BASICS
Course Description: People think they can’t draw, but the truth is they just haven’t learned how. In
this class you will learn different methods to inspire you to draw often and develop your own style.
We will explore basic shape composition as well as line and gesture drawing. You’ll be able to
follow along with the demonstrations and learn about tonal drawing and perspective to add dimension
to your still lifes and landscapes. Students will have the option of adding color near the end of the
session and learn the basics of drawing with pastel.

6. MAXIMIZE IT! QUILTING CLASS
Course Description: Take the fear out of making a large quilt. Now that you have mastered basic
quilting skills it is time to maximize it! This project will take the beginner quilter through the
complete process of making a queen size quilt. Basic quilting skills will be the foundation of the
course while adding strip piecing and some hand quilting. This quilt can easily be converted to a
smaller quilt if desired. Additional sewing time is required at home.

Royal Icing and Rolled Fondant, Rubber Stamp Imprinting and much more…
Course Description: Learn to bake, assemble and decorate a fun, festive Easter Egg Factory or
Bunny Hutch like the pros. Come and decorate sweet and whimsical treats for the favorite bunnies
and chicks in your life. All skill levels welcome. On the first night of class you will need to bring a
batch of prepared raw cookie dough from a recipe that will be supplied by the instructor and cookie
sheets. Students will also need a base and box for transport. The first evening of class you will cut
out, rubber stamp, bake and assemble your creation. The second evening of class you will start to
decorate and embellish your creation. The final night of class you will take your completed creation
home. Please join me for a few evenings of fun and cookie creativity. (Adults only).

A Decorated Cupcake for Every Month of the Year
Course Description: Learn to decorate cupcakes for every month of the year. Come and decorate
cupcakes for New Years Eve to Christmas and everything in between with
buttercream, royal icing, rolled fondant and much more. Students will need to bring 6 plain cupcakes
per class, decorating tips (list will be supplied by instructor) plus a container for transport. Decorating
materials will be supplied.

13. YOGA FOR HEALTH
Course Description: This yoga class is for beginners, but beneficial for any level. Incorporating

14. JIN SHIN JYUTSU SELF-HELP
Course Description: In this self-help workshop, students will learn Jin Shin Jyutsu touch healing
sequences that release daily tensions, harmonize destabilizing attitudes, promote relaxation, and heal
common ‘dis-ease’ (headaches, fatigue, allergies, etc). The class will introduce the history and basic
physio-philosophy of Jin Shin Jyutsu, but primarily focus on hands-on applications and self-help
practice. Class fee includes textbook (published by Jin Shin Jyutsu Inc.).

16. WRITING FOR CHILDREN
Course Description: This creative writing class is designed for beginners who wish to focus
exclusively on writing for children and young adults. We will explore picture books, easy readers,

18. PHOTOGRAPHIC LIGHTING
Course Description: “Light makes photography” – George Eastman. This two-night course is
designed to give you a better understanding of photographic lighting principles. There will be a
strong emphasis on how to get the most out of your hot shoe flash! Students should bring their
cameras and flashes as this will be a hands on course.

19. USING YOUR NEW DIGITAL CAMERA
Course Description: Got a new digital camera and not sure how to work all the bells and whistles?
This workshop will help you get acquainted with your new camera and help you discover the
excitement of digital photography. You will learn to utilize the distinctive features of your camera as
well as how to maximize your photo opportunities. This is a hands on class, so bring your cameras!
Class size is limited to insure individualized attention, so sign up early to get a spot. This course
takes place over two evenings.

20. EDITING YOUR DIGITAL PHOTOS
Course Description: The world of digital photography has opened up new and creative ways to edit
and enhance photos. With this course we will help you get the most out of your digital images:
starting with workflow. We will also cover some common editing techniques such as cropping, resizing an image, sending an email attachment and more! This is a basic, entry-level course into
digital editing. Students should bring their cameras.

Course Description: Central High School doors are open to the public to walk the halls for health,

I.D.s. This is a do-it-yourself program.
