Midge Johansen
2012 is shaping up to be a busy and creative year for all - several exhibitions and
events are fast approaching (Kings Christian College Easter Art Festival, Paradise Kids
charity exhibition by Tony Dowers & Ole Agerby, Just Nudes Ipswich), planning is well
under way for the joint Sculptors & Potters Market Day, we have set our dates for our
Annual Members Exhibition and Exotic Erotic together with a few other proposed fun
events, Sculpture Forums with guest speakers to entertain and enlighten you, several
workshops are coming up and entries have closed for SWELL Sculpture Festival with
entrants awaiting the selection process.
We are planning a Xmas in July fun-filled social night & Member's Talent Quest - start
rehearsing "your thing"! Our members have many more talents than just sculpting.
There is probably no denying now that the world has moved into a new age of digital,
computerised and internet means of transmitting information, and that the sending of
newsletters and information via 'snail-mail' (posted hard copy) is swiftly being overtaken
by email, websites and information networking sites such as Facebook. Most major Orgs
and events now transmit information to members via emailed newsletter subscription,
websites or email rather than by post (which can be more costly to print and post than
your annual membership fee).
Online or emailed newsletters provide an incredible facility to historically document our
events and relevant news in full technicolour - with full-colour pictures, brochures and
photographs and to transmit information swiftly and cheaply in a manner not possible
with the old way of copying, printing and posting, which is becoming too expensive and
economically not viable without increasing membership fees to cover such costs.
With this in mind, those members that do not provide an email address to have the
Newsletter emailed to them will have only the first 5 pages (in greyscale) copied and
posted to them - and the full-colour Newsletter may be viewed and read in the Benowa
& Mudgeeraba rooms where a copy will be placed in a folder for the library - and not to
be removed. The Newsletter will now have a DIARY DATES & CALENDAR OF EVENTS
page at the beginning that lists coming events to remind you of what is happening. The
Newsletters may also be read online on our Official Website where it will be archived one
month after production.
At this time, I will remind you that our Sculptors Society is an organisation run entirely
by volunteers and we need a new crop of enthusiastic members to begin thinking about
stepping up for the next committee as all positions will be declared vacant at the Annual
General Meeting later this year. If you believe that our Sculptors' Society plays an
important part in our art community, you need to be prepared to help in some
small way.
On the topic of volunteers, I would ask that you be considerate when making
requests of members of the committee. We are not full time, paid professionals, but
squeeze our commitment to the Sculptors' Society and other artists into already busy
lives. So please support us and your Sculptors’ Society with lots of new and fabulous
sculptures to exhibit, together with some voluntary time and assistance with tasks when
required.

PRECIOUS GOLD, WHITE GOLD, PLATINUM & PEARL:
ONE-DAY INTENSIVE WORKSHOP WITH
MIDGE JOHANSEN.
An intensive “Hands-on” workshop for those who have wished to use fired
commercial lustres and Precious 22Carat Gold Overglazes and metallic lustres
but not sure of the many techniques available to them.
Spectacular fired and glazed results with colour and texture that can
be applied to your pots and work!
DATE:
Sunday July 29th 2012
TIME: 10am - 4 or 5pm
VENUE: Gold Coast Potters' Assoc Workshop, Mudgeeraba.
Mudgeeraba Heritage Centre, Museum & Art Village, Mudgeeraba Rd
(Opposite Milky Way)
COST: $140 per person - inclusive of tuition, workshop notes, all supplied
materials, pre-prepared glazed & textured experiment tiles to work with & keep, use
of Premium Gold, Galaxy Gold and Pearl Lustre & other products, supply of brushes to
use, firing of test pieces & and all other necessary materials or tools.
PRECIOUS GOLD SECRETS
Areas covered include:
1 Demonstration and explanation of various gold and lustre techniques
used on a variety of Midge's pieces.
2 Familiarization & demonstration of various products.
3 Understanding Under-glaze, Glaze and Over-glaze - and how Underglaze and Glazes create the effect you require from the Precious Gold
and lustres.
4 Handling Precious Gold and toxicity knowledge.
5 Use of correct brushes and tools, brush care.
6 How to use the specialized Gold Pen.
7 Important tips on clean and efficient work practice to maximise results
and avoid expensive waste.
8 Correct application of over-glaze - Precious Gold and Pearl lustres are
different, require different firing temps and should not be fired
together at the same time.
9 Gloss, Matte and Texture gold effects - how to create different
textured glaze surfaces for gold and lustres.
10 The look of gold ‘nugget’ and textured gold. How to create the preglazed surface with wax-resist, sand, texturing products.
11 Halo and Galaxy Gold technique - creating beautiful halos and
patterns.
12 Fabulous metallic rainbow colours by knowing which glaze colour to
use under the lustres, and which lustre to use over another luster.
13 Marbling with Precious Gold and use of solvents, plastic wrap.
14 The special technique of dipping and rolling in a Precious Gold bath to
create beautiful filigree patterns.
15 Crackle Gold effect.
16 Correct firing schedule, procedure, temperature and use of cones– test
pieces to be fired at Potters workroom and arrangement to pick up
your pieces.
17 Kiln atmosphere explained (oxidation, reduction). Knowing what
glazes are over-glaze compatible - some are not.
18 Different Glazed temperatures for Gold - using Gold on earthenware,
stoneware and porcelain.
19 How to remove fired gold mistakes.
20 Common causes of Gold and Lustre faults - how to avoid.
This is an expensive and time-consuming workshop for me, as I must source
and pre-purchase products and pre-prepare and fire many special
practice tiles for you to keep as your future ‘reference library’ – all of
the lustre techniques require pre-glazed surfaces to work on, some require
multiple firings, and several of the techniques require special pre-glazed and
fired surfaces that you may not know how to do – all of these ‘mysteries’ will
be explained in this workshop.
IMPORTANT - Bring a notebook and pen -lots of information to note!
PRECIOUS GOLD SECRETS
Participants will be provided with pre-glazed tiles of different colours and
specialty textures to practice the techniques demonstrated so that they have
their own reference ‘library’ for future use. I will supply all materials required,
such as special brushes and other tools required for the workshop, cleaning
agents, tissues, rubber gloves, industrial hand-cleaner etc.
Premium Gold Overglaze is relatively expensive. I’ll supply the 22 carat Premium Gold, Pearl,
Halo Galaxy Gold and fluids required for practice on the prepared workshop test-tiles – if you
want to try Precious Gold on small glazed pieces of your own choosing during this
workshop with my assistance, you will need to email notify me so that I may have it
available for you to purchase at recommended retail, prices to be advised.

NEXT SCULPTORS' FORUM
23rd APRIL 2012 - 6.30pm
Next Forum speaker will be sculptor Greg Davidson - innovator of the
VACARTISTRY collection. This promises to be an interesting presentation
as Greg uses recycled vacuum cleaners for his amazing artworks.
At present, the name of Gold Coast sculptor Greg Davidson may not be recognised, the brand name of Greg’s
VacArtistry artwork is also unrecognisable, but all will change when his sculptures gain their freedom and are let
loose on the public – the 2012 launch of VacArtistry is now under planning and marketing has begun with
preview displays taking place at various locations in the Eastern States.
For the past three years, Greg has collaborated with various retail outlets in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast to
‘rescue’ hundreds of vacuum cleaners being consigned to landfill. Components from, upright, barrel, tub, turbocharged, cyclone-powered, red, black, and brindle, vacs’ have been transformed into what ‘those-in-know’ have
titled: the VacArtistry Collection.
Described as inspirational, sensational, and bloody unique; concepts, characters and inert objects of all
persuasions capture the mirth of Masters Dada, Dali, and Disney; all is fused into what Davidson calls - a
platform for exploration. The collection of more than fifty art works extend from a four meter high Sci-Fi
Transformer called the Carbon Crusader, to a poignant environmental piece: Ice shelf Breakdown; a King
Emperor Penguin and chick.
Greg’s background (musician, theatre technician, published cartoonist, playwright and author) has also fused and
much has been contemplated as to creating an exhibition that will be visually entertaining and educational.
PowerPoint slideshows on LCD screens within an assortment of sculptures demonstrate the progression of how
each piece in the Collection came to fruition. Various sculptures utilise low energy LEDs to focus attention upon
the recycle/sustainability philosophy. “Mega tons of vacs’ are dumped in landfill each week,” said Greg, “and no
recycling schemes are being facilitated.”
The March preview display of the VacArtistry Collection can be viewed at Kings Christian College, Easter Arts
Festival, 27-28 March.
On 23rd April, at the Sculptors' Forum held by the Sculptors Society Gold Coast at their premises at Benowa
(Schoolhouse Gallery, corner Ashmore Road & Carrara St , Greg will be guest speaker and deliver "The Creative
Gene; asset or affliction" - a humorous oration on the beginnings of the Arts and Craft movement, and his
journey to arrive at the VacArtistry Collection. A Q and A session will follow.
The Creative Gene: asset or affliction?
Greg Davidson, a proponent of various art genres, humorously recollects how the creative gene has propelled him
into many gobsmacking situations. Sculpting became his latest obsessive/compulsion and for the past thirty
months the unique VacArtistry Collection, consisting of over thirty sculptures, was created from discarded
vacuum cleaners. The Collection is now a platform for collaboration of the Arts and business to promote
recycling/sustainability awareness.
A sample of the VacArtistry Collection may be viewed at Kings Christian College
Easter Arts Festival, March 27 - 28, and perusal of the VacArtistry website is also invited:

IT'S JUST PAPER?
By paper artist Calvin Nicholls. There is nothing simple or ordinary about his paper
art. Where we would simply use a piece of paper and a pair of scissors, Calvin uses
everything you could possibly think of to carve, cut and rip perfect details onto his
creations. The motifs are all wildlife, and that must be one of the hardest categories
of things to make with paper since there are sometimes impossible details on
animals. These details are amazing and I can't even fathom the time it must have
taken to create these masterpieces of art.
As you may know we had a bit of a "clean up" at the Benowa workshop rooms.
If anyone has left any unfinished work or other "bits and pieces" not relevant to
the rules for storage within the premises, (there are some old dusty ceramic
ornaments) could they please come and collect them as they can no longer be
stored and are going to be thrown out.
