Mellor Hennessy was part of the Portfolio integration task force when Astra
and Zeneca merged in 1999. Since then he has been a member of the cross
functional team running the Portfolio process and making incremental
improvements at each annual review. Recently he has taken on leadership of the
R&D Performance Network – cascading the R&D scorecard throughout the
organisation. His professional interest is innovation in management practice.
AstraZeneca is a global Pharmaceutical company with an R&D organisation of
13,000 people and annual budget of $3-4B. A stage/gate process is at the heart
of Pharmaceutical R&D and the Development organisation at AstraZeneca is
currently focused on establishing a project management and continuous
improvement culture. Performance metrics throughout R&D are pipeline
progressions, time, unit cost, and value.
Mellor and David will describe the evolution of both Portfolio Management and
Business Performance Management at AstraZeneca, explaining what innovations
in practice have worked well and why. They will also share learning from some
of the failures, and describe future ambitions.
