Your appearance must give the class an additional clue to your identity. I do not expect a whole costume, a simple prop is all that is needed. For example, Wanda Petronski could wear her hair slicked back, and carry crayons and wrapping paper. Or, Karana could wear brown clothes to represent hides, and she could carry an abalone shell and arrows. Wear your “costume” to school and bring clothes to change into afterward if necessary. . 2. Your speech should tell about one event that happened to you in the story that will give the class a clue about who you are. For example, Wanda could tell about the day the hundred dresses game began from her perspective, and Karana could tell about the battle with the Aleuts. Jack could talk about the day he accidentally bought the bushel of ties. FOCUS 1. Start your speech with a “grabber” opening. For example, Wanda could begin, “ I guess you could say that drawing dresses changed my life…”. Karana could say, “ We burned the bodies of the dead Aleuts, but we buried our warriors on the headland.” Jack could say “ I learned that opening your mouth at the wrong time can sure get you into trouble.” 2. Speak using first person sharing your character’s feelings about the event you are describing. For example, “I just wanted the other girls to like me”, or “ I hate the Aleuts for what they did to my people, and my father.” or “ I’m sure glad Quartz Jackson was getting married.” 3. Try to scan the audience while you talk, and speak loudly and clearly. 4. HAVE FUN!
