FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Medication Management Systems Associate Linda Strand Presents at
the Symposium for Advanced Diabetes Educators
Minneapolis, MN (April 18, 2008)—Medication Management Systems co-founder and
consultant Linda M. Strand, Pharm.D., Ph.D., D.Sc. (Hon) today presented at the International
Diabetes Center Annual Symposium held in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. In a presentation
entitled The Emerging Role of the Pharmacist in Diabetes Care, she described how medication
therapy management services (MTM) integrate with the work of advanced diabetes educators.
And she presented new data that documents MTM practices supported by MMS’s Assurance
Pharmaceutical Care System™.
Dr. Strand’s presentation highlighted data recently featured in a white paper she co-authored,
Co-morbidities and Drug Therapy Problems in Patients with Diabetes, which included analyzed
results of 1,122 patients seen by pharmacists that received medication therapy management
services between January 1, 2003 and December 31, 2004. Among the results Dr. Strand
presented:

Patients with diabetes have an average of 8 other co-morbidities

These patients are taking an average of 13 medications

Over half of the drug therapy problems identified by pharmacists were not associated
with the patient’s diabetes, but with the patient’s other co-morbidities

With MTM services, pharmacists were able to create positive outcomes in 82% of the
patients’ medical conditions

The economic outcomes were just as positive: the MTM service resulted in a returnon-investment of 3:1.

“Patients with diabetes need MTM services and the pharmacists providing care deliver a
valuable service to these patients,” Dr. Strand suggested. “With MTM, pharmacists can play a
much more active role in helping to management patients with diabetes. And integrating MTM
services with the efforts of advanced nurse educators will only improve the quality of care
patients receive and the positive outcomes they can realize.”
