1 NEWSLETTER VOL 2 ISSUE NO 4 2004 This is Scout. We rescued him about 5 yrs ago. Sadly, he is no longer with us but I'm glad I still have the pictures and the memories Owner: Previous Newsletter Enjoy your dogs! Our next discussion will be how to read a KUSA pedigree as well as HD & ED certificates (Hipdisplasia and Elbow displasia.) To make you start thinking, which do you think is most important HD or ED? KUSA/AKC certificates/Pedigree: KUSA – Kennel Union of South Africa 2 AKC – America Kennel Club I will attach both pedigree of my Import of USA to show the difference in Pedigree certificates. Only KUSA is the certificate excepted in South Africa. The Boerboel breed dogs in South Africa do have their own certificate. M wonderful boy Chase who passed away last year, Debbie Mystical Bullmastiffs 3 AKC PEDIGREE: Abbreviations Sire: Dad of your dog Dam: Mom of your dog CH: Champion OFEL: (number) Hipdysplasia certificate RD: Red color 4 FN: Fawn color BRDL: Brindle BLK MSK: Black mask AKC number: WR00228005 (each dog has his own number) This is not their Microchip number DNA number (which I would like to see that SA make it compulsory) This is Zoë, MBPIS Am/Can Ch Knatchbull's Lady MoonStruck. Lynn Zellen KipRidge Bullmastiff's Grimsby, Ontario, Canada 5 KUSA CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRATION AND CERTIFIED PEDIGREE I will go into more detail and I would suggest you take your dog’s pedigree and look at it while I go through all the points. 6 TOP: Breed name and your dogs Kennel name. This can be different from his call name. Call name is: Major (no where mentioned on pedigree) Kennel name: Bastion Champagne Wishes of Desoete If The Desoete name is in the front it is my own breeding Example: Desoete Lady Tamika Reregistered from another breeder on to my name: The breeders name is first; Bastion is from the Bastion kennels in USA and he is registered in my name of Desoete LEFT: Registration number (this number will remain) Tattoo no: Mainly the German shepherd breeds ID no: Micro Chip number Date of birth Member no: Color of dog Breeder Owner (you can reregister this dog and make your self the owner) This is important if you breed or show. Not important if you just a pet lover. ABBREVIATIONS: CH: Champion Your dog can only become a champion if you show the dog. HD; Hipdysplasia ED: Elbowdysplasia 7 8 9 HIPDYSPLASIA + ELBOWDYSPLASIA CERTIFICATES The only acceptable certificate in South Africa is done by Dr. Robert Kirberger. You local Vet can take the x-rays but only Dr. Kirberger can supply you with the certificate. Your local Vet can supply you with a Prelimary certificate which is not accepted by KUSA, showing and breeding You will notice in Major’s HD certificate he is a 0:0 And in his ED certificate he is a 0:1.) These X-rays can only be taken when the dog is 12 months old. My question in the beginning: To make you start thinking, which do you think is most important HD or ED? I am going to answer next year when I will have a complete News Letter only on Dysplasia. Look carefully at above certificates so that if you ask the breeder for proof of KUSA registration and HD certificates you not be given fake certificates. Compliments of the Season and may you have a Wonderful New Year. Remember your dog want a special gift from Santa!! Because he has been a GOOD DOG!!
