PreviousNext
Occupational therapy, a health profession based in the biological and social sciences, is one of
the fastest growing professions of the decade, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Occupational therapists help people of all ages do the things they want and need to do through
the therapeutic use of daily activities or occupations, according to the American Occupational
Therapy Association. Interventions include helping children with disabilities participate fully in
school and social situations, helping people recovering from injury regain skills, and providing
support for older adults experiencing physical and cognitive changes.
Our occupational therapy program teaches students to restore, reinforce and enhance
performance through meaningful activities or occupations that help individuals learn the skills
and functions required to take care of themselves, be productive and improve overall health and
well-being. Our programs are earning national recognition for developing competent, ethical and
empathetic occupational therapy practitioners and occupational scientists who are improving the
health and working lives of individuals and communities.
National Ranking and Accreditation
Our professional master’s program in occupational therapy is currently ranked 21st in the
country, according to U.S. News & World Report. The Occupational Therapy program is
accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the
American Occupational Therapy Association located at 4720 Montgomery Lane, Suite 200,
Bethesda, MD 20814-3449. ACOTE's telephone number, c/o AOTA, is (301) 652-AOTA.
In the Field
Students in the department benefit from diverse fieldwork experiences at world-renowned
medical institutions, local and regional school systems, skilled nursing facilities, mental health
facilities, rehabilitation centers, and in community-based programs. You will have the unique
opportunity to demonstrate professional competencies under the supervision of a qualified
occupational therapy practitioner in these settings.
Respected Faculty
Our faculty members excel in teaching, research and service. They provide you with valuable
insight about the field. Their areas of expertise address range from children and youth on the
autism spectrum to adults living with persistent mental illness to older adult occupational
engagement, successful aging, and caregiver issues.
Maryland’s Only Program
The department offers the state’s only program in occupational therapy that prepares students to
become certified as occupational therapists.
Please review our National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy pass rates.
Build Your Network
Students and faculty members regularly serve in leadership roles in the Maryland Occupational
Therapy Association and American Occupational Therapy Association.
