The refined historical records of volcanic eruption around Taiwan and the volcanic hazard assessments Chang-Hwa Chen and J. J.-S. Shen (Institute of Earth Sciences, Academia Sinica, Taiwan) The historical record of the active volcanic eruption is extremely important for the natural hazard reduction, especially in high dense of population area. After the contradictory points of the historical eruption records around Taiwan were clarified, we have modified the locality, eruption size, and eruptive period of eruptions and discussed the highly uncertainty records. Three of five submarine eruption records (catalog numbers 0801-4, 0801-5 and 0802-1) can be clearly identified, which belonged to the different tectonic frames, the northern Taiwan Volcanic Zone (NTVZ) and the Quaternary Ryukyu Volcanic Front (QRVF), respectively. These three records strongly suggested the magma activity in the northern offshore Taiwan is not completely quiet. The volcanic hazard reduction should be seriously considered in the northern Taiwan. In spite of their implicit of the other records (catalog numbers 0801-2 and 0801-3) still left some impenetrable points. The refined results shall contribute to the Smithsonian Institution, Global Volcanism Program and the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth’s Interior (IAVCEI) for editing next vision of the Volcano Catalog in the World.
