COMMENDING HIGH SCHOOL GREENSTATE SPONSOR STEVEN SHERRILL ENVIRONMENTAL EFFORTS THE CLUB FOR AND AND THEIR AWARDS; 10 11 WHEREAS, Sandalwood High School’s GreenState Environmental 12 Club is a student organization devoted to environmental education 13 and action, involving students in activities designed to protect 14 and enhance Jacksonville’s natural resources and beauty; and 15 WHEREAS, GreenState’s faculty sponsor for the last 6 years, 16 Steven 17 science 18 involvement and action in environmental causes and issues; and 19 Sherrill, Sandalwood’s teacher, is marine passionate science about and environmental encouraging student WHEREAS, in recent years the GreenState club has consistently 20 participated 21 including 22 Clean-up, the Right Whale Festival at Jacksonville Beach, and the 23 St. Johns River Clean-up, and has organized and raised funds for 24 on-campus 25 detector light switches to save energy when rooms are unoccupied 26 and making and decorating rain barrels to collect rainwater for re- 27 use; and the in a wide City’s projects variety Adopt-A-Road such as of environmental program, retrofitting the activities, annual classrooms with Coastal motion- 28 WHEREAS, GreenState’s numerous activities and accomplishments 29 have received wide recognition, including being named the Duval 30 County Public Schools’ first Green Champion School in 2010 and the 31 winner of the Keep Jacksonville Beautiful award the same year, 1 being recognized as a Top 3 Finalist for the Florida Green School 2 Awards, and winning the Presidential Volunteer Service Award; and 3 WHEREAS, GreenState’s faculty sponsor Steven Sherrill was 4 recognized as the school district’s Green Champion of the Year in 5 2010 and is certified as a Green Classroom Professional by the 6 Green Building Certification Institute; and 7 WHEREAS, the club’s latest project involves collecting illegal 8 “snipe signs” from roadsides and public rights-of-way and using 9 them to create bird houses, of which over 250 have been created and 10 given away to faculty, staff and others to erect in their yards and 11 neighborhoods; now therefore 12 BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Jacksonville: 13 Section 1.
