Responsible for: Senior II and junior staff on rotation, assistant staff assisting the team, visiting students HOSPITAL PROFILE The Whittington Hospital is a medium sized district teaching hospital, which traditionally serves the population of North Islington and West Haringey. Acute services are delivered on an in-patient and day care basis, additionally a wide range of outpatient/follow-up services including both diagnostic and clinical support facilities are provided, and there is an Accident and Emergency department. JOB SUMMARY: The post holder will have a key role in the development of multidisciplinary neurology services in the Whittington Hospital. This includes leading a team of physiotherapists and ensuring that comprehensive evidence-based physiotherapy care is provided to patients with neurological conditions in both acute and rehabilitative phases. The role will support the development and coordination of a multidisciplinary stroke service in the Whittington Hospital and lead the development and implementation of the physiotherapy rehabilitation programmes for this. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: CLINICAL: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. To undertake the assessment and appropriate management/treatment of clients referred to the neurology team, including inpatients and appropriately referred outpatients, utilising advanced and up to date clinical skills to implement appropriate treatment plans. To be responsible for the quality of clinical practice within the team, including having a detailed knowledge of the complexities of rehabilitating patients with neurological pathologies, chronic disability and impairment of functional independence. To demonstrate an advanced understanding of Physiotherapeutic interventions for the neurological and stroke patient groups. To be actively involved in health promotion for neurological and stroke client groups. To participate in training and supervision of junior staff, students and assistants within the Neurological team. To act as a resource and advisor to colleagues at the Whittington NHS Trust regarding neurological rehabilitation, especially for stroke patients, and ensure the Neurological team maintains a high profile within this and surrounding organisations. To develop the service in line with changes within the NHS. To take part in on-call and weekend work. MANAGEMENT 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. To link closely with other staff and managers on matters affecting the delivery of the service and assist in development of services according to patient needs. To take responsibility for knowing and acting under departmental policy and procedures, and supporting the Neurology Team to do the same. To review and develop Neurology Team profiles/guidelines in conjunction with Service Manager. To be responsible for monitoring and managing staff performance within the team, working alongside the Service Manager to support and develop all staff through regular supervision, and individual performance appraisal. To actively participate in this process for personal growth and development. To monitor and implement caseload management for all Neurology staff, and provide advice and support on caseload management in liaison with the Service Manager. To promote a positive image of Physiotherapy and monitor, maintain and further develop working practices in line with CSP and local standards of care. To show initiative in managing changes to the service, department and profession in conjunction with the Service Manager and Service Director, working as an integral part of the Neurology Team and Physiotherapy / Therapy Department. To facilitate an effective education programme for Neurology staff and to ensure they achieve the core objectives for their jobs in conjunction with the Service Manager. To demonstrate self-education and the use of CPD by utilising the opportunity to attend lectures and courses, keeping up to date with current practice, professional developments and social and health care issues. To ensure continual evaluation of Physiotherapy interventions and their outcomes linking this to evidence-based practice wherever possible. To provide an educative role to other staff and carers where appropriate. To be responsible for Physiotherapy students on clinical placement in the Neurology team and when the clinical educator providing supervision for students. COMMUNICATION AND TEAMWORK: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. To develop and maintain close and flexible working relationships with professional colleagues within and outside of the organisation. To attend relevant service and departmental meetings, including case conferences, discharge and care planning meetings. To be actively involved in promoting the profile of the Neurology Physiotherapy Team within the Trust. To liaise with clients, their carers and other disciplines both in the hospital and the community, to ensure a seamless service provision which is relevant to individual’s needs and to facilitate effective discharge planning. To promote good multidisciplinary working practices, and work with multidisciplinary teams to set up, utilise, and evaluate care pathways, reflecting the total patient experience. To be aware of current research and developments within clinical area and to ensure services are developed on the basis of up to date evidence-based practice. To facilitate audits and contribute to the audit programme within the department. To lead staff through the basic processes of research and audit in order to comply with departmental standards. To be responsible for the collection of patient statistics and information required by service managers. To be responsible for keeping up to date patient records in accordance with local Neurology Team and Physiotherapy guidelines and standards and to write specific reports. GENERAL: 1. 2.
