Legal requirements for getting married in Antigua & Barbuda http://www.antigua-barbuda.org/Agmarr01.htm Happiness is a wedding and/or honeymoon on Antigua and Barbuda, where the weather is perfect, the scenery intoxicating and the beaches pure perfection. Best of all, most island hotels offer wedding and honeymoon packages that make planning the big event both hassle-free and affordable. With a choice of glorious venues, couples have the option of going with a formal church wedding and hotel reception. Outdoor and beachfront weddings and receptions are equally popular. To marry on either island, a couple’s first stop will be the Ministry of Legal Affairs in the Government complex on Parliament Drive. Here, couples are required to pay a registration fee and a application fee for the special marriage license. There is also marriage officer’s fee. Office hours are Mon. – Thurs., 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM. To apply for the appropriate marriage documents, couples must present valid passports as proof of citizenship. If either party has been divorced, the original divorce decree must be presented. If either party has been widowed, the original marriage and death certificates are required. Both members of the couple must be over 15. If under the age of 18, written authorization to wed from parents or guardians is required. All documents presented must be originals or certified as original by the issuing authority, and they must be in the individual’s legal name. Parties must provide affidavits if they are known by another name. Two witnesses to the marriage are required to make the marriage both legal and binding. To be married in a church, couples must secure the permission of the church authorities. Some churches also require that couples attend pre-nuptial counseling. A list of churches can be obtained from the Antigua and Barbuda Department of Tourism. First, there is a registration fee of US$40 that must be paid at the courthouse at the corner of High and Temple Streets. The application fee for the special marriage licence is US$150, and the Marriage Officer's fee is US$50. How about documents? What do we need? You both will need valid passports as proof of citizenship. If either of you have been previously married, then bring along the original divorce decree or, in the case of a widow or widower, the original marriage and death certificates. Are there any other legal requirements? Both parties must be over 15, if under 18, written authorization from your parents or guardians is required. It is important that all documents presented are original or certified original by the issuing departments or offices. Ensure that all documents are in your legal name, and provide affidavits in cases where you are known by another name. Your marriage must also be solemnized or celebrated in the presence of two or more witnesses, apart from the Marriage Officer. (Just ask a guest or two to do this for you). Is the marriage ceremony legal? Of course, it is both legal and binding. Additionally, consent must be expressed by both parties to accept each other as husband and wife. Can I be married in a church? Yes, but it requires the permission from the church authorities where you wish to be married. Have your pastor contact the church to establish the requirements. Some churches ask that the couple attend prenuptial consultations. Allow some extra time if planning a church ceremony. Where can I get a list of churches in Antigua? Contact the Antigua and Barbuda Department of Tourism for a list of churches on the island. Can my hotel assist with the arrangements? Certainly, as most hotels in Antigua and Barbuda offer wedding and honeymoon packages. Check with your travel agent or the Antigua and Barbuda Department of Tourism for more information. The Ministry of Legal Affairs is open Monday to Thursday, 8:30am to 4:30pm and on Fridays from 8:00am to 3:00pm. Flights which arrive into Antigua after 3:00pm will not permit couples to get to the Ministry of Justice in time to apply for the Special Marriage License. In such cases, the couple can arrange for the marriage to take place either the next day after completing the application process, or, on any available day thereafter. For any enquiries regarding your marriage certificate please contact The Registrar's Office in Antigua. Civil marriages take place at the Civil Registry Office in downtown Oranjestad. A couple must provide a certified Certificate of No Impediment (often referred to as a Single Status Report) from their country of citizenship, proof that they are both single and eligible to marry. Documents should be sent to Bureau Burgerlijke Stand en Bevolkingsregister, Schoolstraat #2, Oranjestad, Aruba, Dutch Caribbean, fax (297) 583-9160. E-mails can also be sent to cayetano.christiaans@aruba.gov.aw RELIGIOUS CEREMONIES For a Christian blessing, a local Protestant or non-denominational pastor can officiate at a church or any other preferred location; a copy of the marriage certificate from the home country is required. For Catholics, the ceremony must take place in the church and all documentation must be submitted four months prior to the chosen date. Pre-marital classes and written permission from the home parish are also required. For a Jewish wedding, both partners need to submit a verification of Judaism. Authorization to marry in Aruba is required from the hometown rabbi and a formal petition must be submitted to the Aruba Jewish Community. Click here to read the marriage requirements GETTING STARTED SAVE THE DATE Pick your date and send out your “Save the Date” card indicating Aruba as your chosen wedding destination. (Hotel details can be furnished at a later time.) MAKE IT LEGAL Choosing to make your wedding legal in Aruba will add much more meaning to your destination wedding. A wedding planner has the knowledge and contacts necessary to make this a quick and seamless process and is the recommended option. The ease and peace of mind of having a professional handle all the paperwork is well worth the minimal additional cost. If you still prefer to handle this on your own, contact the Civil Registry: fax (297) 583-9160 / cayetano.christiaans@aruba.gov.aw SELECT HOTEL OR INDEPENDENT WEDDING PLANNER A wedding planner will handle everything on your special day so you can be totally relaxed and carefree. Once you inform your planner of your venue of choice, he or she can proceed - provided that they have an idea of what you envision on your big day. These professionals work with reputable vendors and will handle every aspect of your ceremony and reception, fulfilling all your needs and meeting all your expectations. SOME ITEMS TO CONSIDER… It may be quicker, easier and more economical to print your wedding invitations at home rather than having them printed in Aruba and shipped to you. Having a hairdresser on your special day is a good idea; Aruba trade winds can be quite strong. Consult the sunset time in Aruba rather than that in your hometown. Keep the shipping of special favours, gifts, decorations, etc. to an absolute minimum, due to import duties and breakage. Local photographers and videographers have ample experience with the lighting in Aruba at sunset. Bringing your own might seem like a good idea, but keep in mind that, unless they have previous experience with photography (at sunset) in Aruba, it will be a challenge for them. You don’t want them to use your big day as their training session. Please contact your preferred wedding planner for further assistance.
