A Community-based Vision for the Coast would comprise the following guiding
principles:

Ecologically, biologically and culturally significant areas including coastal
watersheds, wetlands, beaches and inshore marine ecosystems are identified and
their integrity protected.

Development occurring in coastal areas is economically diversified and
ecologically, socially, culturally, and economically sustainable.

Land use and coastal management decisions are reasonable, informed by up to
date ecosystem and economic information including climate change threats,
mitigation and adaptation methods.

Ecological as well as economic information on coastal areas is collected and made
available to communities and the general public to enable greater community
participation in management decision-making.

Coastal communities are actively engaged and adequately resourced to participate
in stewardship programs and partnerships with government and the private sector
aimed at sustainable use of coastal areas.

Coastal communities are supported in their efforts to maintain working
waterfronts and to adapt to the impacts of climate change.

Traditional public access to coastal areas is maintained in such a way as to protect
ecologically sensitive coastal ecosystems and wildlife habitat.
