A Community-based Vision for the Coast would comprise the following guiding principles: Ecologically, biologically and culturally significant areas including coastal watersheds, wetlands, beaches and inshore marine ecosystems are identified and their integrity protected. Development occurring in coastal areas is economically diversified and ecologically, socially, culturally, and economically sustainable. Land use and coastal management decisions are reasonable, informed by up to date ecosystem and economic information including climate change threats, mitigation and adaptation methods. Ecological as well as economic information on coastal areas is collected and made available to communities and the general public to enable greater community participation in management decision-making. Coastal communities are actively engaged and adequately resourced to participate in stewardship programs and partnerships with government and the private sector aimed at sustainable use of coastal areas. Coastal communities are supported in their efforts to maintain working waterfronts and to adapt to the impacts of climate change. Traditional public access to coastal areas is maintained in such a way as to protect ecologically sensitive coastal ecosystems and wildlife habitat. KT Revised October 9, 2008
