SAMPLE ANCHOR INTRO Wisconsin farmers have a lot of faith in their cattle, and some even enter their young stock in cattle shows years before the competition.. In this segment of Wisconsin Dairy News we’re highlighting a dairy farm family who thinks they just might have a prizeworthy cow. Scene 1. 2. Notes Video Troy Wendorf, Dairy Farmer Crescentmead Farm Ixonia, WI 3. 4. Larry Nelson, Executive Director Wisconsin Holstein 1 Audio The Wendorf family, like other farm families, is dedicated to the care of their dairy cows. When preparing for a big show, the cows get extra-special attention. “They get baths everyday, they get washed almost everyday, they go out in their own separate lots in herds of small groups. They get the best of the best hay, their ration is balanced weekly.” All this pampering was done in an effort to garner best of show at the Wisconsin Holstein Futurity Show held recently at the Wisconsin state Fair. “It allows our members to showcase their great genetics and the time and dedication that they Association 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. put into it. Some may mention luck, but there’s a lot more than luck that goes into it.” The Wisconsin Holstein Futurity is a non-traditional cattle show not only because entrants exhibit their cows wearing formal wear, but because exhibitors enter their animals three years prior to the show in hopes of raising a highquality show cow. The Wendorfs have been showcasing their cattle for decades and put a lot of faith in their cows’ genetics. Todd Wendorf, Dairy Farmer “The first time that we had won, I Crescentmead Farm think it’s back in 1992 and she Ixonia, WI ended up being nominated for AllAmerican as a heifer, and so all we did was pray that she would put on that really good udder that she’d be able to make that Futurity and do well; and we got lucky!” The Wendorfs entered two of their Holstein show cows in the futurity show, hopeful that they did everything necessary over the years to produce a winner. Troy Wendorf, Dairy Farmer “We feel that we got lucky and Crescentmead Farm we’re very happy with how our Ixonia, WI cows are doing.” As luck would have it, they won! And that’s Wisconsin Dairy News.
