The Washington State Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) is seeking a visionary and dynamic leader to
join the OSPI team as the Program Supervisor of the Office of Native Education. This critical and innovative full-time

OSPI Mission and Vision
In collaboration with educators, students, families, local communities, business, labor and government partners, the
Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction leads, supports and oversees K‒12 education, ensuring the success of all
learners. Washington’s education system prepares each student to live, learn and work as productive citizens in the 21 st
century.
Position Overview
Work with educators and others in providing technical assistance, training and information to school districts and tribal
communities to ensure that school districts and tribal communities remain current with Native American curriculum
and that Native American students have equal access to all educational programs and opportunities. Implement
legislation as it relates to Indian Education. Serve as OSPI’s liaison to the Tribes, and Governor’s Office of Indian Affairs.
Role
As defined under RCW 28A.300.105, this position requires the following:
Provide leadership, technical assistance, and advocacy to promote the academic success of all students, particularly
including American Indian and Alaska Native students;
Provide assistance to school districts in meeting the educational needs of American Indian and Alaska Native students;
Facilitate the development and implementation of curricula and instructional materials in Native languages, culture and
history, and the concept of tribal sovereignty pursuant to RCW 28A.320.170;
Provide assistance to districts in the acquisition of funding to develop curricula and instructional materials in
conjunction with Native language practitioners and tribal elders;
Coordinate technical assistance for public schools that serve American Indian and Alaska Native students;
Seek funds to develop, in conjunction with the Washington State Native American Education Advisory Committee, and
implement the following support services for the purposes of both increasing the number of American Indian and
Alaska Native teachers and principals and providing continued professional development for educational assistants,
teachers, and principals serving American Indian and Alaska Native students:
(i) Recruitment and retention;
(ii) Academic transition programs;
(iii) Academic financial support;
(iv) Teacher preparation;
(v) Teacher induction; and

(vi) Professional development;
Facilitate the inclusion of Native language programs in school districts' curricula;
Work with all relevant agencies and committees to highlight the need for accurate, useful data that is appropriately
disaggregated to provide a more accurate picture regarding American Indian and Alaska Native students; and
Report to the Governor, the Legislature, and the Governor's Office of Indian Affairs on an annual basis, regarding the
state of Indian education and the implementation of all state laws regarding Indian education, specifically noting system
successes and accomplishments, deficiencies, and needs.
Key Responsibilities
 This position requires the ability to develop good relationships with all the major players in education,
particularly the Tribes and tribal communities. Building and maintaining strong relationships are key elements
to the success of this office.

This position provides leadership in the improvement of education resources for Native American children
throughout the state; provides technical assistance to school districts and tribes; manages and monitors the
Office of Native Education (ONE) budget.

This position serves as the executive secretary and represents the state Superintendent of Public Instruction at
meetings of the Washington State Native American Education Advisory Committee (WSNAEAC) to OSPI.

This position advises and consults with school boards, school administrators, educators, and teachers on
matters pertaining to the involvement of Native families and community members in the education of Native
American children.


This position provides training for the STI tribal sovereignty curriculum to teachers and staff who work with
Native American students; but who also work with all students.

This position requires the ability to raise funds for curriculum projects and other projects of the Office of Native
Education (ONE).

This position maintains the involvement of Native people in public/tribal education; and collaborates with
other groups in multicultural education effort.

This position develops and implements plans and policies to improve the education of Native American
students.
Desirable Qualifications
The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction is seeking candidates who exemplify the characteristics and
experiences of the following profile:
 Project management skills
 Master’s Degree in Education or related field.
 Five years’ experience in program administration at the district level or above.
 Experience providing training and support of Native students, tribes and community.
 Experience working as a collaborative member of intra and/or inter-agency teams.
 Skills to communicate effectively in both written and oral form to a broad and diverse audience, including
public speaking.

Compensation
The annual compensation for the position is $70,740 per year and will depend upon experience, educational
background, and qualifications. Washington State has a generous benefit package including health, dental, and life
