ROOTS AND WINGS
FIFTH GRADE
LESSON ELEVEN
Rev. 10/03
Review (1 min.)
I.
A. Ask students to take out their R&W folders and put their nametags on.
B. Remind the students what they learned the last time you were together.
They can use the worksheet they filled out in lesson #10.
II.
Overview (1 min.)
Today they will role-play solutions to conflict situations using what
they learned about a conflict resolution process in Lesson #10. Tell
them that they will use page 16 in their R&W folders today.
Tell students that they are to incorporate all the steps on their
worksheets to resolve the conflict. If they leave a step out, they will be
asked to add it in and redo their role-play.
III.
Program (10 min.)
A. Break the students up into 6 groups (If you have 31 students, 5 groups
will have 5 students, 1 group will have 6 students).
 Choose a team leader.
 Hand out the “Conflict Role-Play Worksheet” to all the students in
each group and go over each step.
 Tell them that each situation will be role-played by 2 groups (i.e.
there are only 3 situations, but 6 groups). This is to highlight the
fact that there is usually more than one solution to a conflict.
B. Explain to students that when they are to assign roles, and make one
person responsible for reading the situation to the class before the roleplay begins.
C. Give the groups 8-10 minutes to prepare. This will allow for each
group’s role-play to be 5 minutes (including class discussion).
IV.
Evaluation (32 min.)
A. Use the happy face squeeze ball to select groups to perform their roleplays.
B. If a group leaves out a step, ask them to add it in and redo their roleplay. If they need help figuring out how to do that, ask the class for
suggestions.
C. Ask students to put their copies of the Worksheet in their R&W folders.
V.
Summary (1 min.)
Ask students to think about how they handled their conflict situations
today the next time they come up against a conflict in their real lives.
Remind them of the steps: Communicate – Brainstorm – Compromise –
Follow through – Mediation if necessary.
Lesson Purpose
