PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Present
SCOTTSDALE HEALTHCARE, SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA
Scottsdale Healthcare is a non-profit system with two acute care hospitals (590 beds), an outpatient
surgery center, specialty hospital, Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center, Realty Company, and a
Foundation. The system includes approximately 4,500 employees, 1,700 medical staff members, and
800 volunteers.
As Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer, administratively responsible for achieving
system-wide operating results. Report directly to Chief Executive Officer, and participate in Board of
Directors meetings.
Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer, (July 2003-Present)





Provided leadership to revenue growth, cost management, and business planning activities. Fiscal
year 2003 results included a 12% increase in patient revenue, $7.3 million in net income, and an
increased focus in developing profitability within clinical service lines.
Designed and implemented a revised organizational plan, which included the recruitment of a
Vice President. This model has helped to clarify executive team accountabilities and to launch a
system-wide supply management initiative.
Provided leadership to capital and facilities plans and projects, linking capital expenditures to
strategic plan and days cash on hand. Results of these efforts have included increased Medical
Staff involvement in the capital budgeting process, and the development of 5-year plans in capital
intensive departments.
Revised employee orientation sessions to increase emphasis on system Vision, Values & Goals.
Employee satisfaction with the content and format of the orientation process has significantly
improved.
Successfully transitioned the outpatient imaging services joint venture through a collaborative
process with the Radiologist partners, and with appropriate legal and financial considerations.
Senior Vice President/Chief Operating Officer, (1999-July 2003)


Provided leadership to system-wide Clinical Service Line initiatives, including Women's &
Children's, Cancer and Cardiovascular Services. This role has included engaging physician
champions and hospital staff, selecting administrative talent, and leading the development of both
an overall vision and specific goals. Implementation of these plans has resulted in new and
improved clinical programs, facilities, and an overall increase in market share to a current level of
41%.
Developed and implemented a system-wide operational turnaround plan through cost reductions,
productivity improvements, organizational changes, and revenue enhancement initiatives.
Operating income improved from a $20 million loss in fiscal year 2000 to a net income of $7.2
million in fiscal year 2002. Employees' confidence regarding the long term future of the
organization has significantly improved as well.



Negotiated and operationalized an Affiliation Agreement with the University of Arizona/Arizona
Cancer Center to enhance research and clinical trial capabilities for cancer patients. This
partnership has improved the quality and integration of care for cancer patients, and has enabled
the Arizona Cancer Center's National Cancer Institute comprehensive cancer center status to be
extended to Scottsdale Healthcare.
Developed a plan to improve Medical Staff input into administrative decision-making as part of a
Medical Staff task force report. This plan has served as a useful tool in enhancing Medical
Staff/Administrative relationships.
As a member of the executive and leadership team, participated in design and implementation of
Vision, Values and Critical Goals to strengthen the organizational culture.
Senior Vice President/Administrator, (1991-1998)



Developed and implemented a successful Mayo transition plan, in anticipation of the Mayo
Hospital opening in 1998. Although the exodus of Mayo patients resulted in a 40% drop in Shea
Hospital inpatient volume, this volume was restored with community patients within 18 months
following Mayo's departure.
Revised master campus plans for the Shea and Osborn campuses to create a long term approach to
develop facilities and services.
As Administrator of the Shea Hospital, provided leadership to volume growth, patient &
employee satisfaction, program development, and hospital operations resulting in approximately
$95 million in total net income from fiscal year 1995 through fiscal year 1998.
Vice President/Administrator, ( 1986-1991)
 Integrated the practice and culture of the Mayo Clinic Scottsdale into the system while developing
strong community physician practices.
 Successfully introduced 35 Mayo Clinic Residency Programs at the Shea Hospital.
 Defeated a union organizing campaign for professional and technical employees, and established
mechanisms to improve employee communications and relationships.
 Planned and successfully completed over $100 million in construction projects.
1979 to
1986
BARBERTON CITIZENS HOSPITAL, BARBERTON, OHIO
Executive Vice President/Operations of this 407 bed community teaching hospital, reported
directly to the President. Served as an Assistant Administrator (1979-84) and as an Associate
Administrator (1984-85), and acquired progressive management and staff responsibilities.
Responsibilities included managing 20 clinical, ancillary and support departments.
Other
responsibilities included negotiating physician and vendor contracts, recruiting new physicians to the
community, and developing a successful Preferred Provider Organization. Participated in Medical
Staff and Board of Trustee meetings, served as acting President in the President’s absence, and as a
preceptor for administrative residents. Also successfully implemented cost reduction programs in a
union environment, resulting in improved hospital financial performance, while maintaining strong
patient outcomes.

Administrative Resident of this 286 bed regional University Health Center of Pittsburgh Hospital.
