They contain a variety of learning activities to suit the learning needs of the students and comply with BOS syllabus documents. She has developed units of work that are based on both her knowledge of content and students’ prior knowledge and experience. ICT requirements are incorporated in her planning. Her students use explicit terminology and appropriate software in developing and organising concepts and presenting information. Her planning documentation also demonstrates that she utilises a wide range of pedagogy that is relevant to the KLA and to her students’ learning needs. She subsequently modified her lessons and included strategies to address the learning needs of all her students. She has incorporated ‘Learning to Learn’ strategies – a school-wide program. She has sought assistance from the STLA and ESL teachers, worked collaboratively with them and has implemented their suggestions for groups and individuals in her classes. Emma’s literacy teaching is explicit and focused and targets the needs of the students in her classes. Her lesson planning and teaching practice take into account the cultural diversity of her classes. This is evidenced in the way, for example, she incorporates multicultural perspectives in her selection of resources. ELEMENT 3 TEACHERS PLAN, ASSESS AND REPORT FOR EFFECTIVE LEARNING Comment Emma’s lesson plans cover core concepts, detail goals for the lesson and include evaluation of the lessons according to the level of achievement of the goals. Her plans contain a wide range of activities within lessons. Her documentation shows that assessment is developed according to the concepts covered in the planning and is linked to the outcomes that are the focus of the lesson. Emma ensures variety in assessment and uses both formal and informal assessment strategies such as assessment tasks and tests as well as work samples, student self-assessment and informal observations. Emma also uses assessment to provide further direction for her teaching. She keeps accurate and focused records of student achievement which she uses when reporting to parents. Her reports are submitted punctually and written with attention to grammar, spelling and the intended audience. ELEMENT 4 TEACHERS COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY WITH THEIR STUDENTS Comment Emma explains the focus and goals of the lessons clearly and logically to her students. She uses questioning techniques and strategies that require higher order answers, stimulate discussion and maximise student participation. She directs and guides conversations and often gives the responsibility for discussion to the students themselves. The resources she chooses are appropriate to the task and to the learning needs of the students. The group work that occurs in her classes is structured and purposeful. Emma provides clear task and role guidelines for the members of the group so that the students know what is expected of them and perform accordingly. The students themselves are required to assess the effectiveness both of the way they worked as a group and the work they produced. ELEMENT 5 TEACHERS CREATE AND MAINTAIN SAFE AND CHALLENGING LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS THROUGH THE USE OF CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT SKILLS Comment Emma models respect, tolerance and fairness in her interactions with students. She establishes clear directions for students to follow and articulates clear expectations, procedures and routines. She has an identifiable code of behaviour for her classes, based on the school’s welfare and conduct policy. She ensures students know the focus and goals of the lesson and plans differentiated lessons that address the learning needs of the students in her classes. ELEMENT 6 TEACHERS CONTINUALLY IMPROVE THEIR PROFESSIONAL KNOWLEDGE AND PRACTICE Comment Emma has worked closely with colleagues and her supervisor and, on their advice, has made adjustments to her planning and teaching. She has participated in School Development Days and has also shared her knowledge of new assessment strategies with her faculty. She has joined the English Teachers’ Association and has participated at the school level in the development of several new units of work for stage 5 for implementation next year. ELEMENT 7 TEACHERS ARE ACTIVELY ENGAGED MEMBERS OF THEIR PROFESSION AND THE WIDER COMMUNITY Comment Emma prepares for Parent/Teacher interviews by having assessment and progress data ready. She keeps notes of her conversations with parents and all communication she has with parents follows the school’s policy. When a sensitive issue arose, Emma reported it immediately to the appropriate staff member and maintained confidentiality.
