October News from Room B ~ 14
Dear Parents,
Here is an update on the happenings in our room. Have your child tell you more!
Science: We finished our study of soil. The students have performed tests on the soil to identify each
component by its unique characteristics. We also observed changes in our mini-compost bags.
Social Studies: We will be studying Geography. We will focus on the seven continents, the oceans, and
various landforms. Watch for information coming home regarding the culminating project.
Spelling: We are studying words with short vowels; long vowels; possessive pronouns; homophones; words
with consonant digraphs (ch, wh, sh, th) and compounds words.
Math: We just finished Unit One of Bridges and begin Unit 2. In this next unit, the focus will be on the
Number and Operations in Base Ten domain as the students explore base ten concepts and models within
1,000. We will also be working in the Measurement and Data domain as the students use non-standard
units to determine length of various objects. On my website you will find more information for each
Bridges unit. Click on the Bridges Math Family Letters and it give you a link to the letter. Click on
Bridges Unit 2 and it will give you links to games and tools.
English: We are working on how to write complete sentences. We are also working on capitalization and
punctuation. We will begin to study nouns, verbs and adjectives in the coming weeks.
Reading: We have been practicing the comprehension strategies of making connections and creating
images. We have also been finding and discussing the problem and solution in Poppleton books written by
Cynthia Rylant and Nate the Great books by Marjorie Sharmat.
Read Aloud: We are currently reading Gooseberry Park by Cynthia Rylant.
Creative Writing: We have been writing class books. We just sent two to the YEA (Young Elementary
Authors) center last week!
Home Reading: We start the Book It program in October. The children will earn a coupon each month
(October – March) for one personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut for completing and turning in their monthly
home reading. Also, we are going to focus on Caldecott books for home reading this month. Thank you in
advance for helping your child reach his/her monthly reading goal.
Birthday Book Club:
Registration for the Birthday Book Club is now open! Hudson PTO invites you to commemorate your
child’s birthday by buying a brand new book for your child’s school library. The cost is $15.
Your child will:
· Choose a new book from the school library’s Birthday Bookshelf
· Have a permanent bookplate with his/her name in the inside cover of the book
· Receive a certificate and bookmark during library period
· Have the first opportunity to check out the new library book
Order deadline is November 1 for birthdays falling between now and February, but open enrollment is
available through the website at any time.

Needed: Box Tops! We have a good start on our collection. It would be fun to win the friendly
competition between classrooms. :o)
Special Days: Thursday, October 15th is an early release day for students. The children will be
dismissed at 11:35. There is no school on Friday, October 16th. On Friday, October 30th we will have our
Halloween party in the afternoon. Chelsea Ruiz, Drae’s mom, has volunteered to be the Head Room
Parent. She will be in touch with you if you signed up to help at the Fall Party. The parade is set to start
at 2:45. We will start our festivities at 2:15, then take a break for the parade, then come back to the
room for more fun! The children will have time to change into costumes here at school. That way they do
not have to wear the costume on the bus. Please, no blood, guts, gore or weapons of any kind. These are
not permitted.
