Spelling Homework For your literacy homework this term you are expected to practice you spelling at home. You can either do SACAWAC (Spell and Cover and Write and Check) or you can use the list of activities to practice different ways of spelling your words and find what method works best for you. If you chose to do an activity that does not require you to write anything in your jotter then please have your parent put a note in your book to say what you completed. Remember if you learn 6 words you complete 4 activities, 8 words you complete 3 activities and if you are learning all 12 words you must complete 2 activities. Speed Writing Mnemonics Inside the word How often can you write the word correctly in one minute? Do this for each word. Making up a “story” to help spell a word. Look for small words Write your spelling inside the word. words using a different colour for About – a, out, bout. each letter. Teacher – tea, each, her, ache Eg. Was Was Auntie Sad Fancy Writing Create fancy lettering for your words. Bubble writing Write your words in bubble writing. Use Colours Tall and short. Three Times Draw the shape of the word in a table for tall and short letters. Write the word three times in different colours. three three three Eg. ball Pyramid Writing Consonant Circles Write your words in the shapes of pyramids. Write the word then a e i o u circle all the consonants. Write the word then go over each vowel Eg. was in blue. Eg. was w wa was w a s Blue vowals Eg. because Words without vowels Write each word but instead of a vowel put a dash. b_c_ _ s _. Go back later and try and fill it in. Then write three times. Draw a grid using a ruler and spell your words in the grid. Add random letters to create a wordsearch for someone else to find them Write your spelling words then find the sum. Vowels = 10 Consonants = 5 Tasty words Cris- Crossed Ambidextrous! Have a hunt in the kitchen for tasty treats to spell your words with – like raisins or grapes. When your finished you get to eat them! Write your words twice – once along the way and once vertically so they cross in the middle! Write your words normally then swap your pencil into the hand you don’t normally write with – now try writing your spelling words with that hand! Telephone words Over the top Listen carefully Spelling Bee Translate your spelling words into numbers using the telephone keypad! Write your spelling words then go over the top of them with a coloured pencil, a crayon then a pen. 007 Secret Agent Ask your mum or dad to spell out a word – then tell them what word they have spelt. Get your parents to test you on your words and show off spelling bee style! Type them! Handwriting practice Write out the alphabet giving each letter a number (e.g a = 1, b = 2, c = 3…) Then write your spelling words in your own secret code! Type your spelling words on the computer three times – make each word have different font – print, cut out and stick in your homework book! Add your words and choose from a game, a test, or print a worksheet to practice your handwriting. Stick into jotter when complete. Story time Put each of your words in a sentence to create a story. Underline your spelling words. ForwardsBackwards Write out your words then write them out again but backwards! Eg. then neht T T H E N E N Was = 5 + 10 + 5 = 20. Write your spelling words in careful dots – remembering tall and short letters. Then go over the dots with with a pencil. Spelling flashcards Spelling poem Silly Sentence Spelling Flower Make a set of spelling flashcards for yourself and have someone test you on them! NEWS FLASH! Write a poem using your spelling words. Underline your spelling words. Put each word into a silly sentence – remember capital letters and full stops. Flash Writing Draw a big flower and write each of your words in the petals or leaves. Search through the newspaper or magazines to find letters that make up your words – cut up and stick into your jotter. Write each of your words on two different cards or bits of paper. Turn all the cards face down and mix them up. Lay out your cards in rows and flip over two cards at a time and try to find the pairs. Toss a word In a dark writing use a torch to write your words in the air – see if someone else can work out what it is! Draw a different shape for each spelling word. Right your spelling word down each side of the shape. Choochoo Words 3d words Toss a ball or beanbag back and forth with a family member or friend, saying a letter each time. If your on you own you could still toss a ball in the air yourself! Connect the Dots Write your entire list of spelling words end to end like a train. Use a different colour for each word. Use plastecene, playdoh or bluetac to sculpt your words in 3d letters. Trace around Rhyming words Write your spelling words in dots. Then go back over them with a coloured pencil– connecting the dots to make your words. Write each word with a pencil, then trace around it with a pen, crayon or coloured marker. Write each of your spelling words – next to it write a word that rhymes! Use your finger to spell out each word on someones back – can they guess what the word is?
