Carlyle Greenwell Research Fund (Archaeology)
Information for Applicants 2014
Carlyle Greenwell was an architect who died in 1961, bequeathing his estate to the University
"for student research, field work and original literary work in Anthropology in such manner as the
Senate of the University shall decide". When the Department of Anthropology split from
Prehistoric Archaeology in the 1990s the fund was divided into two parts. The current
Department of Archaeology (in the School of Philosophical and Historical Inquiry) administers
that part of the fund reserved for student research in Anthropology (Prehistoric Archaeology).
Closing Date
There are currently two application dates (late April and late September). Round 1 Applications
close on Wednesday 30 April 2014. Please e-mail your application to
wendy.reade@sydney.edu.au .
Conditions of Award
Grants may be made to any Honours or Postgraduate student currently enrolled in Archaeology.
In line with the spirit of the original bequest, preference will be given to research concerned with
Australia, the Pacific and Southeast Asia in prehistory although research in other fields of
Archaeology may also be supported.
Greenwell grants are not normally awarded for work which could be more appropriately funded
by other sources (e.g. Near Eastern Archaeology Foundation, University of Sydney
Postgraduate Research Support Scheme) including supervisors’ own research funds and any
extra research funding awarded to postgraduates in receipt of APAI grants or similar. Greenwell
grants may however be awarded to cover legitimate student research costs in excess of funds
already obtained (or applied for) from elsewhere.
The maximum grant which will be made for any one project is $10,000 for PhD students, $5,000
for MPhil students and $500 for MLitt and Honours students. Students upgrading a project from
MPhil to PhD are eligible for an extra $5,000 only. Given increased costs and heavy demand on
the scheme, applicants cannot assume they will always be awarded the maximum and should
scope their project budget accordingly. All the funds are allocated each year and there is usually
less money left in the account for the later round.
Grants are to be used for the specified research project only. They may not be used for
preparation of a thesis for presentation. They may not normally be applied to reimburse funds
already spent, although the committee will consider doing so in certain circumstances.
Grantees must present a brief report on their project to the School. Claims for funds must be
accompanied by receipts and be made by the end of the year in which a grant is made. Details
about how to claim will be given to successful applicants.
All publications, reports and theses arising from research supported by the Fund are expected to
acknowledge its support.

Completing your application
Ensure that your application is complete. Students are advised to discuss their application with
their supervisor before submitting. Wendy Reade (Greenwell Research Fund Administrator) can
provide general advice and can be contacted by phone on 9114 1150 or email
(wendy.reade@sydney.edu.au).
The Greenwell Research Fund Administrator will review applications before they go to the
Committee and may need to contact you at fairly short-notice to clarify details or ask you to rewrite part of your application. If you are likely to be away or otherwise unavailable during this
time please organise to show your proposed application to the Greenwell Research Fund
Administrator before you submit it so that any such issues can be dealt with.
Please type your application.
Item 10 Project Details: Honours students are expected to outline their project in a page.
Graduate students are expected to present sufficient detail (maximum 2 pages) to explain the
following details of their project to members of the Committee (not all of whom are familiar with
their research area):
You should indicate:
 the research problem (in brief outline)
 the intellectual background to this problem (in brief outline)
 the proposed research for which you now seek Greenwell funding, including methods,
materials and location
 how this work relates to the overall research plan for your degree
 (postgraduate students only) if you are seeking Greenwell funding for current research
activities which may then require significant additional funding to complete, please
comment on how you propose to fund the extra research needed to finish your
MPhil/PhD.
Item 16 Budget Details: A detailed budget is expected, including specific quotes where
appropriate e.g. airfares, equipment purchase. Please prioritise your budget into A, B, and C
categories.
Maintenance includes insurance (except where this is already covered by the University –
please check with Risk Management before you submit your application), equipment
maintenance, in-transit accommodation and similar items not part of everyday living expenses
(which are not supported). Please be specific about what you need the money for.
Field Expenses includes research visa fees, photocopying, essential consumables, informants,
etc. Please be specific about your needs. General personal computer and similar equipment is
usually excluded.
Equipment includes any items costing more than $250. Give at least two competitive quotations.
Travel means fares for yourself only, and as cheaply as possible. Justify your journey and choice
of mode of transport.
Item 17 Justification of Budget: Outline why the money is necessary for you to complete your
research.

Ben Sandford Cullen Award in Archaeology
Information for Applicants 2014
Applicants for the Carlyle Greenwell Research Fund can also be considered for the Ben
Sandford Cullen Award in Archaeology.
The award is intended to commemorate Dr Ben Cullen’s work in Archaeology. Ben Cullen (19641995) grew up in Lorne NSW and attended Wauchope High School. At the University of Sydney,
he studied Anthropology, Prehistory and Celtic Studies. His Honours thesis in Prehistory was on
the mechanism of human cultural change, a topic he pursued in his PhD dissertation and in
many scholarly papers. At the time of his death, Ben Cullen was an Honorary Fellow at the
University of Wales, Lampeter, and had recently been appointed to a research position at
Queen’s University, Belfast.
Conditions of Award
The value of the award is $800. It is open to currently enrolled full-time and part-time
postgraduate research students in the Department of Archaeology. The award will provide funds
to postgraduate students whose research in Archaeology is theoretically innovative to assist with
research, travel or publication expenses. The award is made once per year.
Application
If you would like to be considered for the Ben Sandford Cullen Award, as well as for the Carlyle
Greenwell Research Fund, please indicate this on your application at Item 18. Please note that
the two awards can be held in conjunction.
