Undergraduate Research Summer Scholarship Opportunity
PROJECT TITLE: Characterisation of microbial pathogens associated with human
lung infection
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: this undergraduate scholarship project explores the use of stem cells
and fungal adjunct to inactivate a range of Gram positive and negative bacteria associated with lung
infection. Specifically the successful candidate will characterise a range of microbial organisms for
antimicrobial resistance potential and will use novel disinfection technologies for examining their
destruction. The scholarship is linked to an overarching prestigious HRB grant in this field of study
that was jointly awarded to AIT and NUI Galway.
Duration of project: 3 months (June to August 2015)

Minimum qualifications/experience necessary/any other requirements:
Applicants must be currently pursuing a science qualification at third level and provide supporting
background information why they wish to undertake such experience and intimate achievements to
date in terms of presentations or awards to date.
