Introduction: What is today all about?
- Students will share what they drew about their homeless stereotypes (10 min)
- I will then explain the realism of homelessness. Parents, families, people with jobs and
income, etc. guaranteed to shock their minds (10 min)
- Next students will draw and write about on the other side of the paper a reflection of what they
now know about homeless people look like, how they live, how much money they earn, and how
they think the homeless got into their situation (25 min)
- Students will also begin their food and jacket drive today.

Introduction: What is today all about?
- Student will be placed into groups. There will be 3 boxes made with masking tape… a large
one 7 feet diameter, a med. Box 5 feet diameter, and 3 ft diameter small box
- students will learn about household incomes and family sizes in comparison to living space
- students will all try to stand in the boxes representing a family income with large family sizes
and they will learn about the types of situations that force homelessness such as number of
family members, demographics of families, and size of income. 35 min
- students will then reflect on their own living conditions, share if they are comfortable about
themselves or someone they know (while maintaining confidentiality) and write a paragraph on
what they learned from the exercise. 10 min

Introduction: What is today all about?
- Student will be placed into groups in which they will research on of the the following topics:
- San Jose city laws about/against homelessness
- California laws about/against homelessness
- city, state, and national legislations that aide the fight against homelessness and hunger
including
movements and major charity organizations
- Students will then share what they have found and explain what this means to them. Students
are also urged to also look up newly elected props

Introduction: What is today all about?
- Students will begin to draft ways they believe are feasible for them to aid the less fortunate. (5
min)
- Students will then come up with a grocery list to feed 100 people with no more than $100
using the internet and sales papers. Toiletry items may also be included. (30 min)
- Next, students themselves will draft a collective letter to be given to parents, different food
banks and grocery stores asking for donations to their cause (10 min)
- A shopping list will be approved by me and items will be purchased by myself, Ms. Bubaker,
and/or Mr. Hong

Introduction: What is today all about? Students will watch the Will Smith movie “Pursuit of
Happyness”.
While they watch the film, students will be given a reflection sheet which will consist of the
following questions that they must answer by the end of the viewing.
- what is the message behind the movie?
- what obstacles and struggles does the main character encounter?
- how is he viewed by the public? Businessmen? His family?
- how would you describe the character?
- what emotions does the movie include?
- how frequently do you believe this happens in the world and why is it a form of
discrimination?

Introduction: What is today all about? Students will research and learn all of the different
internal struggles among the homeless including illnesses, mental instability, war veterans, lack
of job skills, battered women and children, and job lay offs.
- what types illnesses are common among the homeless? Are there vaccinations for them?
- what ways could you help the homeless achieve employment?
- what programs are there to aide homeless war veterans, especially those injured in war?
- what programs are there to help the children in battered women shelters?
Students also will begin their Christmas Warmth drive in which families will be asked to
donate blankets, pillows, sweaters, beanies, toiletries, and new undergarments and socks for
babies, children, and adults.
Students will also bring in an old board game, dvds, art and school suppiles, or toy each for
homeless children.

children’s items, students will create holiday letters for the children in the shelters. They are to
be decorative and heart warming encouraging the kids that they have people that care about them
and working hard to make sure they are comfortable. Letters are to delivered with the toys,
gifts, and other winter items. (45 min)

inviting their parents teachers and staff celebrating their hard work in helping the homeless this
summer. Students will also host a brief slide show and explain what they have spent the last six
weeks doing and what they have learned.
