G C C II Süddeutscher Lehrverbund Katalyse SS G South German Catalysis Institute Graduate study course-Winter-Course 2007/2008: “Catalysis: Fundamental Aspects and Common Principles” Invitation The Scientific Committee expresses an invitation to participate in the graduate study course which will be held near Ulm starting with a two day session in Schloss Reisensburg, Wissenschaftszentrum der Universität Ulm, in Günzburg. Reason Catalysis has a remarkable importance in our modern industrial society. Nearly all the products that we use in our everyday lives were produced with the help of catalysts. Catalysis is a particularly interdisciplinary science. It comprises the traditional fields of chemistry, biology, physics, material science and process engineering. Aim and Format It is the essential aim to intensify the education in the promising sector of catalysis, without having to extend the normal duration of the studies. A further purpose consists in abolishing the existing barriers between the traditional academic disciplines and to lead the new generation of scientists as early as possible to the interdisciplinary way of thinking and working that has gained such an enormous importance in our days. PhD students of any field can be accepted into this program, as long as they are involved in the field of catalysis in a University in Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg or Switzerland. The participation for these PhD students is free of charge. Members of the industry with appropriate preparation can also participate, but in this case a fee of 1500 € will be charged per participant. The main activity consists of full time lectures which will be held every second Friday during the winter semester at the University of Ulm. All the lectures will be held in English by professors from BadenWürttemberg and Bavaria and if necessary by professors coming from other federal states. The content of the lectures: heterogeneous catalysis, from quantum chemical basis to catalytic process engineering, preparation, characterisation and deactivation of catalysts; kinetics, theory and catalytic reactors; homogeneous catalysis, biocatalysis, photocatalysis and electrocatalysis. The lecturers are: Behm, Groß, Hashmi, Jentys, Jess, Lercher, Reiser, Rieger, Tillmetz, Wasserscheid, Weitkamp and Weuster-Botz. The vocational training quality of all the professors will be – according to custom nowadays – evaluated by the participants. The participants and professors will meet just before the beginning of the lectures, in October, in a two day session in which they will get to know each other and where some introductory lectures containing general principles and essentials of catalysis, will take place. The participants will take a written examination after the completion of the program, which is normally in March, and with it’s approval, a certificate issued by the organisers will be awarded.
