Description of Program:
Objectives:
The purpose of the course is to provide for the third or fourth-year medical student an
introduction to the clinical management of patients with digestive and liver diseases.
Activities and Responsibilities of Students:
Each student will take clinical histories, perform examinations, and present at least two cases
weekly to a faculty member who will review the findings in detail, after which the student will
be assigned reading material relevant to the problem presented by the patient. The student is
expected to participate inn regular activities of the Division of Gastroenterology and Liver
Diseases under the supervision of the G.I. fellow and will observe endoscopic procedures,
including ERCP, EUS and liver biopsy procedures, and roentgenographic examinations of the
G.I. tract. Clerkships are available at the John Dempsey Hospital.
Formal Teaching Activities:
In patient care activities meet each morning under the supervision of the fellow and faculty
members, followed by A.M. work rounds which are conducted by the G.I. fellow. There are
daily clinical rounds, during which new G.I. inpatients and consultations are reviewed, and
follow-ups are seen with the G.I. consult attending and the G.I. team. Wednesday afternoon is a
full afternoon of formal teaching activities, starting with G.I. Grand Rounds at 12 noon, followed
by a local faculty lecture, basic science seminar, G.I. journal club, radiology review or pathology
conference.
Supervision:
The G.I. fellow closely supervises the student throughout all hours of the workday, and faculty
members of the Division of Gastroenterology and Liver Diseases interact closely with the
student as preceptors during patient presentations.
Patient Population:
The G.I. service usually follows 6-12 inpatients at the John Dempsey Hospital and has numerous
ambulatory half-day sessions/week. The student will see 1-2 new patients/half-day session and
follow-up cases previously encountered. A large volume of G.I. procedures are performed both
at Dempsey for the students to observe.
Evaluations:
Students will be given verbal feedback by the G.I. fellow and the G.I. consult attending
throughout the rotation. In addition, a written evaluation of the student’s performance will be
done on MyEvaluations.com and forwarded to the office of Medical Student Affairs upon
completion.
