General Directions Regarding Reporting Events




Please list each event only once and in one category only (e.g., you must decide whether a social event that has
a speaker and includes a silent auction is best considered a social event or a scholarship event—it should not be
listed in both categories). You may, however, note in your description of the event that such event touched
upon more than one category (e.g., in the “Athletic Events” category or in the “Scholarship Events” category,
you might indicate: “At our NCAA tournament game-watching parties, we held 50/50 raffles, the proceeds of
which went to our club’s scholarship fund”).
If your club hosted similar, repetitive events such as a game-watching parties or happy hours, please list each
type of event only once and indicate in the description the number of times it was held (e.g., “Hosted gamewatching parties at club sponsor bar for all twelve (12) U-M football games (20-50 attendees on average)”).
Please do not include AAUM-organized events such as away-game events or the Go Blue tailgate in Ann Arbor,
unless there was collaboration in planning and hosting with your club.
If your club organized and/or participated in an event that was primarily organized or co-organized by another
organization (e.g., U-M Office of Development, U-M Office of Undergraduate Admissions, U-M Athletic
Department, U-M Black Alumni, alumni groups of the Ross School of Business or U-M Law School, another
AAUM regional club, a Big Ten alumni group or consortium), please identify that organization and your club’s
level of involvement in the particular event.

2. Over the past year, our club hosted at least one family-friendly event: (Check One)
X Yes
☐ No
If the answer to the question above is “yes”, please describe the family-friendly events, including the date and location of
same:
8/16/14 Harvest Grape Stomp - Festival at the Lakeridge Winery. There was music all day, food vendors, tours, grape
stomping competitions. There were many families in attendance enjoying the festivities.
12/7/14 Feast on the 50 - There is a children's play area and every booth in the alumni village either has a game or is
giving out some kind of freebie (beads, fans, glow necklaces, etc). The event is all you can eat/drink and usually takes
place entirely on the field of the Citrus Bowl (however, this year the alumni village was on the Party Plaza deck which
was not ideal as it was very windy!
3. Describe below how your club has been “A-Maize-ing” in celebrating the U-M spirit over the past year, including
holding any successful athletic or social events or building new programs that you were particularly proud of or that
showcased your club’s innovative approach to building spirit. Please limit your response to 250 words.
This year our club had an "A-Maize-ing" presence at the "Feast on the 50" event. We had a booth in the "alumni village"
that featured a meet/greet with former U-M football player Mike Keller. We also placed 2nd overall in the "Spirit
Competition"… with first place finishes in the Water Pong and Cornhole Challenges. And for the Fight Song portion of
the competition we had a choreographed group presentation signing and using signs and we placed first in that as well.
This was the first year that we placed in any event in the spirit competition. This event had a total attendance of over
3500 people and we had over 50 UM supporters stop by our booth.

Members gain direct access to the University’s vast resources, from which they can obtain the knowledge they
need and want at any point in their lives.
4. Please list all lifelong learning events and activities that the Club organized and/or participated in from July 1,
2014 to June 30, 2015. Do not include career/networking events in this category.

DESCRIPTION OF LIFELONG LEARNING EVENTS
Examples: Cultural/Educations Events such as Museum Tours,
Music or Theatre Group Outings, Book Clubs,
U-M Speakers, Local Lecture Series, Cooking Classes, etc.
Orlando Philharmonic - Steven Jarvi (UM 2000) was competing for
the position of Conductor and was the guest conductor for this
performance. We secured a group rate on tickets and an invitation
to the post-concert VIP reception for a meet and greet with Mr.
Jarvi (side note: sadly he was not hired)
Music at the Casa - Free concert and home tour at the Casa Feliz
historic home in Winter Park, FL.
A Good Old Fashioned Redneck Country Christmas - This play was
written by a local U-M alumnus. She attended the performance
with us and answered questions that we had about the play and
play-writing process.
Conversation with Mike Keller - Former U-M football player Mike
Keller lives near our club geography and generously donated his
time to come to town for 2 events. The turn-out was smaller than
we'd hoped for but it was a pleasant conversation about his
playing days for Bo and his current career as a "start up guru". He
also promoted and signed copies of the book "Bo's Warriors".
Morse Museum - This event was well-received last year so we
made it an annual outing. One of our local alumnus is a docent
and she led our group on a tour of this wonderful art museum. The
event hosts generously donated free admission passes for the
entire group.

5. Describe how your club has been “A-Maize-ing” in seeking out and holding learning events, webinars, or other
development activities that enable alumni to take a fresh look at the world and leverage their special connection to UM. Please limit your response to 250 words.
This year, we were fortunate enough to have a U-M friend in high places. World renowned conductor Steven Jarvi was
chosen as a finalist for the Music Director position of the Orlando Philharmonic. We used our connection to Steven to
create a cultural and learning event in one. Each of the Music Director finalists conducted a concert with the Orlando
Philharmonic, and gave a pre-show lecture about the music and its history. Steven talked through the history and
significance of each piece to be performed, and then we got to hear that history live. He even met with our entire group
for photos at the post-concert reception. All the alumni who attended commented on how interesting the lecture was
and how beautiful the music sounded.

MEMBERSHIP
A strong membership reflects the effectiveness of the Alumni Association and clubs and provides crucial volunteer and
financial resources.
In conjunction with its upcoming bicentennial, U-M is in the midst of the Victors for Michigan campaign and all
University units, including AAUM, are participating. One of the Association’s primary campaign goals is increasing
Association membership. Increasing membership allows us to provide even more robust programming to our alumni,
increased scholarships to current and prospective students, and an even stronger global alumni network. AAUM’s
regional clubs will play a pivotal role in accomplishing this goal, and their enhanced participation in supporting AAUM’s
membership efforts is vital to the campaign’s success. We appreciate your help.

27. Describe how your club has been “A-Maize-ing” in seeking out and developing new opportunities for career
development, working to recruit and engage new members, and promoting your organization through innovative means
to members and the broader community. Please limit your response to 250 words.
We are working hard to engage new members by diversifying our types of events and locations that events are held. It
is a constant struggle in a club with a widespread geography like Central Florida. It is very difficult to please everyone
with types of events or location. In an effort to help us narrow our focus on what/where people have interests we did
an event survey this year. We sent out the survey link via our listserv e-blast in October and posted the link on our
Facebook page as well. We also offered the opportunity in the survey to register to win a UM item of choice (t-shirt,
Page 8 of 18
hat, beach towel, umbrella) if the respondent filled out their contact information (and about 60% did enter the prize
drawing). The responses were both predictable and somewhat surprising and were a driving force in our event planning
for the remainder of this year.

On the scholarship front this year we made an effort to contact all of our accepted students individually by phone to
congratulate them on their acceptance to UM and to inform them of our two scholarships available. This gave us a
chance to personally educate the students about our local club and services that we provide, and talk to them about our
experiences with the university. This proactive approach sparked fun and engaging conversations with local students.
Because of these conversations, 100% of Central Florida's matriculating students applied for our alumni club's
scholarship. Additionally, we are anticipating 100% participation in our annual student send-off party this coming July.
Our club put a real focus on Community Service this year. We participated in our 2nd annual "Hunger Bowl" vs the local
OSU alumni club. This is a month-long event that raises food and funds for Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida.
We also hosted 2 volunteer events at the Second Harvest facility this year. This organization is a clearinghouse for
donated food, providing supplies to more than 550 nonprofit agencies in six Central Florida counties. Additionally, we
participated in a volunteer event at Houndhaven, Inc which rescues dogs and puppies from euthanasia at kill shelters.

75. Apart from the information you provided above, please describe what was unique or significant about your club’s
efforts in Organizational Continuity & Leadership Development over the past year:
To be honest, Leadership Development is an area that our club struggles with. When we have solicited for volunteers
for leadership positions we are not getting a great response to fill our need… so our leadership makeup has had a lot of
the same faces (but moving to different positions) over the past 3-4 years. Regarding Organizational Continuity, we
have made a concerted effort over the past two years to have regular board meetings with a majority of our leadership
in attendance. Since it is difficult to schedule in-person meetings we only do those 3-4 times a year and we try to do 3-4
call-in meetings as well, putting us at 6+ board meetings per year when only 4 are required in our current by-laws. We
have also implemented a club dropbox that all board members have access to which includes our event recap and sign
in forms, photos/artwork for events, AAUM contact information, meeting minutes, completed event recaps, etc. We
feel that having this information available at the click of a mouse will help transition in new board members in the
future.
