FEDERICO BIANCHI CONTEMPORARY ART LECCO Magda Tóthová Als der Zufall zu zweifeln Begann Quando la coincidenza comincia a dubitare Opening 29 November 2008 6.30 p.m. 29 November – 14 February 2009 The moment came when coincidence began to think. to think and doubt, and to ask herself why people use his name so often. "Oh what a coincidence!" or "It was just a coincidence!". All this people, who believe in her existence might even think that she is faire and without prejudices, and there is no need to account for her actions. But what if they were wrong and the universe would be a better place without her? No more victims of circumstances, everything even and balanced, nobody would be stronger than the others or gets luckier by chance. What if she wouldn’t exist anymore? Would everything really change and be easier in a concrete way? Would being rich mean the same as being poor, and happiness equal sadness? What if coincidences wouldn’t be accepted as coincidences anymore and everything what happens would be accepted as already decided before, in the same way as death is settled with the beginning of life. But as she was free of emotions and logical reasoning, all these thoughts were very new for her and these moments of doubting certainly confused her very much. She had to find out what this is all about? If her existence has a sense. And if not, what is to be done? This multipart installation is telling the story of coincidence as a fictional phenomenon with human characteristics and her personal thoughts about her existence. There are three main parts of this work. The first part "What if...." is concentrating on drawing comparisons between two possible situations. The second part "I refuse to be!" is dealing with the moment of refusing to function as coincidence anymore. And the third part pictures the phenomenon coincidence in term of being and his effects on society. There is no final resolution at least, but nevertheless this work tries to show that it’s always a matter of opinion if there is a coincidence or not.
