Destination-based catchments
5.1
This section looks at catchment areas and shopper flows for 23 retail destinations
in the region.
5.2
The towns were selected based on volume of responses from the Where Britain
Shops survey. In most cases data from 2004 and 2005 was combined, except in
Berwick and Wallsend where 2003 data was added to provide sufficient
responses.
Commentary
5.3
The catchment areas mostly display a limited level of overlap when compared. In
other words, shopping habits are distinct, with limited outer areas of overlapping
penetration we typically see in national catchments.
5.4
We see in a number of examples shoppers willing to cross a motorway in order to
reach their destination. Such behaviour is unusual nationally, with few people
willing to cross such a perceived boundary. More typical is the shoppers’ lack of
willingness to cross rivers on their shopping trip.
5.5
The lack of shopping choice between Carlisle and Newcastle gives rise to the
largest catchment areas in England, not just from Carlisle (ranked top) and
Newcastle (second in the country, ranked above centres such as York, Norwich,
Lincoln, Exeter and Hereford) but also from the smaller market towns and the
Metro Centre.
Most extensive catchment areas

Newcastle’s catchment extends two thirds of the way to Carlisle
westwards, and as far as Berwick to the north, with an area of
approximately 7,000 square kilometres generating 90 per cent of the visits.
Penetration is much stronger north of the centre which is where the 80%
catchment covers. The area south of the city has a higher level of leakage


to alternative shopping destinations. Beyond Washington, the penetration
is not strong enough to register within our 90 per cent catchment.
Berwick has a low level of response, but sufficient to show the extent of its
core catchment and the breadth of the overall catchment, extending 30
kilometres in either direction along the A1.
The core Bishop Auckland catchment covers a large area, half way
towards Penrith over the Pennines. To the east, it stops at the A1(M)
motorway.
Darlington’s catchment also extends westwards towards Penrith. It
finishes short of Stockton (eastwards), Ripon (southwards) and Durham
(northwards). There is an area of lower penetration around Richmond.

Hexham’s catchment extends half way to Carlisle along the A69, north
along the A68 towards Jedburgh and south to cover Stanhope. Eastwards,
penetration drops rapidly and peters out around Prudhoe.

Despite The Metro Centre’s location south of Newcastle, its catchment
extends further north than south, to Alnwick (70 kilometres north) and
Newton Aycliffe (35 kilometres south). Penetration is strongest west of the
city centre and weakest on the coast.
Major centres

Durham’s catchment extends eastwards and westwards and crosses both
the A1(M) and A68. The core 50 per cent of shoppers come from within 4
kilometres of the centre.

Middlesbrough penetrates along the coast towards Whitby and south
stopping short of Northallerton. The core 50 per cent shopper catchment
includes Port Clarence, across the river Tees.

Stockton has a crescent-shaped west-facing catchment, extending half
way to Darlington. with no coverage of Middlesbrough to the east.

The Sunderland catchment has strongest penetration in the area from
Sunderland to Seaham to the south. Penetration drops more rapidly
westwards as the catchment approaches Washington and stops at the
A1(M)/A194(M).


Ashington shows a catchment typical of towns in the outer area of a city
centre’s shopping catchment, with limited penetration south and a much
longer tail northwards along the A1 towards Alnwick.


The radial catchment of Cramlington just reaches Morpeth and Blyth.
The North Shields catchment covers Tynemouth, encroaches upon
Wallsend to the west and stops just short of Whitley Bay.

Washington’s narrow catchment extends southwards towards Durham,
but does not cross beyond Gateshead/The Metro Centre to the north, nor
the A19 eastwards towards Sunderland and with only a low penetraton of
Chester-le-Street.
Localised catchments

Blyth’s catchment is compact and its 90 per cent coverage does not
include Ashington, Morpeth, Cramlington or Whitley Bay although it does
include Bedlington to the west.

Chester-le-Street’s catchment does not cover any other centres although
it does border on Stanley, Birtley and Washington.
Hartlepool shoppers are mostly limited to residents of the town. The
catchment does not reach Peterlee to the north or Billingham to the south.


Peterlee serves a localised catchment, extending southwards half way to
Hartlepool and northwards cutting off just before Hetton and Murton.

Redcar’s catchment extends eastwards along the coast half way to
Whitby, but penetration drops rapidly towards Middlesbrough.

South Shields serves a localised catchment that includes Jarrow but does
not encroach on Sunderland, Gateshead or Washington.

Our Wallsend catchment is based on a low level of response, but sufficient
to show its concentration north of the Tyne, cut off eastwards by North
Shields and westwards at Heaton towards Newcastle city centre.

Whitley Bay also has a low level of response, which shows a small
catchment area extending north along the coast to Seaton Delaval. This
contrasts with its leisure catchment (see relevant section).

Gateshead

The catchment for Gateshead extends further than would be expected if
we were to use a computer simulation, reaching beyond Hexham to the
west. We believe this is a consequence of the survey methodology where
some respondents use “Gateshead” to refer to the Metro Centre, although
the extent of our Gateshead catchment is more restricted than that for the
Metro Centre. It is possible our catchment is indicative of linked trips,
where Metro Centre shoppers also visit the town centre to use its services
extending the catchment beyond the immediate area. Exit surveys would
need to be used in this case to confirm the actual scope and penetration of
the catchment.

Tables and maps of origin based flows
5.6
The following tables show the distribution of comparison (non-grocery) shopper
spend from each of the Town Territories. The data source is the same as in the
destination-based maps above. Only destinations with greater than 5 per cent
market share are included. The table shows

the dominance of major centres in the region (Newcastle, Middlesbrough,
Sunderland)

a widespread but lower penetration of The Metro Centre, typical of out of
town malls

leakage to retail centres outside the North East, such as Edinburgh and
Carlisle

penetration of smaller centres whose catchment areas are not displayed
above, such as Alnwick and Billingham.
Each Town Territory is then mapped in the following section.
