Local artist Nancy Judd’s trash fashions begin a five year tour museums around the US.
In January 2013, eighteen of Nancy Judd’s collection of couture fashion sculptures made from trash will
begin a tour of museums around the country. ReDress: Upcycled Style is the name of the traveling exhibition.
Each site will host the show for approximately three months, following are the first three museums that will
take the ReDress exhibition:



January 2013 - Ruth Funk Center for Textile Arts at the Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne,
Florida
Spring 2013 - The Bascom Visual Arts and Education Center in Highlands, North Carolina
Spring 2014 - Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wausau, Wisconsin
Judd began creating recycled fashions in 1998 while serving as the recycling coordinator for the City of Santa
Fe to promote the Recycle Santa Fe Art Market and Trash Fashion Contest which she co-founded 14 years
ago.
“When I made my first dress from Junk Mail, I never would have guessed that I would one day be showing
my work in museums, this is such an honor! I am very excited to see how the museums exhibit my trash
fashion sculptures and interpret the educational portion of the installation. I will also be giving workshops
and presentations on-site in conjunction with the shows.”
Cynthia Graves of Guest Curator, an independent traveling exhibitions service located in Santa Fe, is
managing the project for Judd. Graves offers a wide variety of museum quality exhibits in art, history and
popular culture and has toured traveling exhibitions for local museums including The Museum of
International Folk Art.
ReDress is being professionally crated by Astilli Fine Art Services. They were also hired by the Smithsonian to
crate Judd’s Obmananos Coat, which was accepted into the Smithsonian’s permanent collection in 2010. The
18 pieces in the ReDress exhibition are being crated on their mannequins so that they are ready for
installation when they arrive. The largest crate is almost 6 feet square. Judd has spent the last 2 months at
Astilli’s preparing each piece for the 5 year museum tour. See photos below.
Judd has been creating and sewing since she was a child. Over the years she has designed and made twenty
five trash fashions and shown her work in recycled fashion shows and exhibitions around the world.
International corporations such as Toyota, Delta Air Lines, Coca-Cola and Target have commissioned Judd to
create recycled fashions from their waste products; she owes all but two of the pieces she has created. Judd
uses her work to inspire people to recycle, conserve resources, and prevent pollution. Her innovative
environmental education programs reach millions of people across the globe through exhibitions,
presentations, workshops and international media outreach. Judd has given two TED talks, one in
Albuquerque and the other last November in Santa Fe.
