Futurity off to a flying start
The biggest and richest cutting horse event in the southern hemisphere, the National Cutting Horse Association
(NCHA) Imax Gold Tamarang Futurity got underway today at the Australian Equine and Livestock Events Centre
(AELEC) in Tamworth.
The stakes are high for the hundreds of local, national and international competitors, owners and trainers with
over $700,000 in prize money on the line during the 11 days of competition.
Opening proceedings today were the first go-rounds of the PerfectArena Open Classic Challenge and the Imax
Gold Tamarang Open Futurity, the major event of the competition.
The first round of the Classic Challenge, an event for horses aged between 5 and 6 years, was won by Aaron
Wheatley of Kaarimba, Victoria riding Hells A Comin who finished with a score of 146.
Wheatley pipped Phil Dawson of Glen Innes riding Turpentine Reyn and Jamie Creek of Jerilderie NSW riding
Truclass Slick Chic (IMP), who finished in equal second place, by one point.
NCHA General Manager Glenn Morgan spoke of the high standard of competition on day one of the Futurity.
“We have seen some outstanding cutting horse action today which has certainly set the bar high for the
remainder of the event,” Morgan said.
“The biggest names in the cutting horse industry in Australia and beyond have been in action today,” Morgan
said.
A huge amount of training goes into a Futurity horse with most professional trainers spending around two years
preparing their young horses for the Futurity.
“The Futurity is a culmination of the hard work that riders, trainers and horses have put in over the last one to two
years so the event is a huge deal for all groups involved,” Morgan said.
The highly-entertaining Affinity Insurance Stockman’s Challenge is expected to draw a massive crowd tomorrow
(Friday) evening from 7pm.
The Stockman’s Challenge is considered to be the ultimate showcase of all round horseman talent and will see
stockmen and women battle it out in a competition testing their talent, skills, agility and years of experience.
The 2013 NCHA Imax Gold Tamarang Futurity takes place at AELEC and wraps up on Sunday 9 June.
Tickets for the event are available at the venue.
