C
arl Gerwien, of Alberta,
Canada, was the high-scoring rider on Friday, with 219
points aboard Steady Play; he also
marked 218 on A Smart Blonde
Date. Both mares were raised
and trained by Gerwien and are
sired by Smart Peppy Date, who
Gerwien and his wife, Julia, stand
at their Willow Spring Ranch in
Nanton, Alberta.
“She’s always been good, but
she’s been really, really good since
April,” said Gerwien of Steady
Play, who he rode in yesterday’s
first bunch. “I rode her in the open
and she was good on a tough cow,
but when I got a softer cow, she
overshot it a little bit.”
Gerwien became interested
in cutting nearly 20 years ago at
the same time as his neighbors,
the Hansma brothers. Paul and
Winston Hansma eventually
moved to Texas to work for the
Bar H Ranche. Gerry Hansma and
Gerwien stayed in Canada.
This past fall, Gerwien won
the PCCHA Non-Pro Futurity
on Smartest Little Oak, the first
performer sired by Smart Peppy
Date.

Busy day for Billy Martin
Yesterday, Billy Martin qualified two
mounts for the second round of non-pro
competition, including Keena Pep, one
of the high-scoring horses. Last night,
Martin helped former world champion
bull rider Larry Mahan prepare his horse
for the Celebrity Cutting; Mahan won the
event with 233 points.
Riding Keena Pep next-to-last in yesterday’s fifth bunch, Martin cut the cows
he wanted, then found they weren’t as
good as he had expected. “Fortunately,
my horse covers up a lot mistakes that I
make,” said Martin, who had also shown
his Dual Pep daughter in the first round
of open competition. “I was concerned
when we first rode down there, but she’s
got some look and is bright, and she can
do either the slow or the fast.”
Keena Pep’s full sister is Nyoka Pep,
who won over $80,000. Martin raised
both mares out of Shesa Little Acorn,
a horse he rode to win the non-pro
championship of the Augusta Futurity
5 & 6-Year-Old Classic.
“She’s just like her sister,” said
Martin of Keena Pep. “If you can cut a
cow that has any respect for them at all,
they react to the cow and let you help
them, too. They are both really electric
and confident in what they do. And they
give you a sense of confidence, when
you’re showing them.
Martin, hails from Gettysburg,
Pennsylvania and also has a ranch
near Millsap, Texas. He was introduced
to cutting by Cutter Bill, Rex Cauble’s
famous palomino stallion, and winner of
the 1962 NCHA World Championship.
“I was in the stands at the Washington (D.C.) International Horse Show
when they showed Cutter Bill,” Martin
remembered. “I’d never seen a cutting
horse before. When I saw how agile and
quiet and responsive those cutting horses
were, I gave up all my other recreational
activities and just started messing with

mother, Gay Fosberg, bred and raised the
horse, who was started by Ron Young

“He is really a nice horse,” said
Rapp. “He has a huge stop and he’s
very sensitive and has a lot of feel for a
gelding. He’s always hunting a cow.
“We told several of our customers
that he was for sale, but they weren’t
willing to pay that much for a gelding,”
she added. “So I bought him.”
Rapp also qualified for the second
round on Little Janey Lena out of Phil
Rapp’s great performer Playboys Ruby.

Can you identify the man and the horse in this
picture?
Submit your answer in writing to
Carolyn Crist in the Show Office.
The winner, who will receive a
special prize, will be announced
in tomorrow’s Daily Chatter.
Judy Hamann correctly identified yesterday’s

Georgia Husby correctly identified Thursday’s

Tajikistan.

for the give-away that evening. The final group of
five will meet in the NCHA Media Room, and be
