Sunny Jung, 893-2139, sunnyjung@eastasian.ucsb.edu HSSB2229 M/T/W/R 11:30-12:00 P.M. & by appointment COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is the continuation of History 182A and is a survey of the history of Korea from the early/mid –Yi dynasty century to the Korean War. It will cover topics focusing on Korea’s relation with the West, and neighboring countries, esp. Japan. This course will cover the first Western contact with the Dutch (17thc), the Japanese invasions, the opening of Korea to the West, imperialism, and invasions in the late 19th century, Japanese annexation, independence movements, the colonial experience, nationalism, liberation, division, and the Korean War. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND GRADING: The lectures as outlined in the following class schedule constitute the most important part of the course. The textbook is required. Previewing the lecture material is essential for pop quizzes and discussion in the class. Please plan to attend all classes for lectures.
