Chalice
Say, shall we yield him, in costly devotion,
odours of Edom, and offerings divine,
gems of the mountain, and pearls of the ocean,
myrrh from the forest, or gold from the mine?
Isaiah 60.1-6 Avril McDowell
Ephesians 3.1-12 Alan Green
Matthew 2.1-12
Vainly we offer each humble oblation,
vainly with gifts would his favour secure:
richer by far is the heart’s adoration,
dearer to God are the prayers of the poor.
Liz Rhodes
Otto Benz & Charlotte Ryton
OPENING HYMN
We three kings of Orient are,
bearing gifts we traverse afar
field and fountain, moor and mountain,
following yonder star:
Brightest and best of the sons of the morning,
dawn on our darkness and lend us thine aid;
star of the east, the horizon adorning,
guide where our infant Redeemer is laid.
O Star of wonder, star of night,
star with royal beauty bright,
westward leading, still proceeding,
guide us to thy perfect light.
COMMUNION HYMN
Earth has many a noble city;
Bethl’em, thou dost all excel:
out of thee the Lord from heaven
came to rule his Israel.
Born a King on Bethlehem plain,
gold I bring, to crown him again,
king for ever, ceasing never
over us all to reign:
Fairer than the sun at morning
was the star that told his birth,
to the world its God announcing,
seen in fleshly form on earth.
Frankincense to offer have I,
incense owns a deity nigh;
prayer and praising, gladly raising,
worship him, God most high:
Eastern sages at his cradle
make oblations rich and rare;
see them give in deep devotion
gold and frankincense and myrrh.
Myrrh is mine, its bitter perfume
breathes a life of gathering gloom;
sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying,
sealed in a stone-cold tomb:
Sacred gifts of mystic meaning:
incense doth their God disclose,
gold the King of kings proclaimeth,
myrrh his sepulchre foreshows.
Glorious now behold him arise,
king and God and sacrifice.
Heaven sings: ‘Alleluia’,
‘Alleluia’, the earth replies:
Jesu, whom the Gentiles worshipped
at thy glad Epiphany,
unto thee with God the Father
and the Spirit glory be.
GRADUAL HYMN
O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness;
bow down before him, his glory proclaim;
with gold of obedience, and incense of lowliness,
kneel and adore him; the Lord is his name.
RECESSIONAL HYMN
As with gladness men of old
did the guiding star behold,
as with joy they hailed its light,
leading onward, beaming bright;
so, most gracious Lord, may we
evermore be led to thee.
Fear not to enter his courts in the slenderness
of the poor wealth thou wouldst reckon as thine:
truth in its beauty, and love in its tenderness,
these are the off’rings to lay at his shrine.
These, though we bring them in trembling and fearfulness,
he will accept for the name that is dear;
mornings of joy give for evenings of tearfulness,
trust for our trembling and hope for our fear.
OFFERTORY HYMN
The collection will be for SPEAR
Brightest and best of the sons of the morning,
dawn on our darkness and lend us thine aid;
star of the east, the horizon adorning,
guide where our infant Redeemer is laid.
Cold on his cradle the dew-drops are shining;
low lies his head with the beasts of the stall;
angels adore him in slumber reclining,
Maker and Monarch and Saviour of all.
As with joyful steps they sped,
Saviour to thy lowly bed,
there to bend the knee before
thee whom heaven and earth adore;
so may we with willing feet
ever seek thy mercy-seat.
As they offered gifts most rare,
at thy cradle rude and bare,
so may we with holy joy,
pure and free from sin's alloy,
all our costliest treasures bring,
Christ, to thee our heavenly King.
Next Sunday: The Baptism of Christ
First Reading: Genesis 1.1-5 Gill Thompson Second Reading: Acts 19.1-7 Robert Irvine
Intercessions: Susan Roberts Gospel Reading: Mark 1.4-11
Chalice: Susan Roberts & Gill Shepherd
Holy Jesus, every day
keep us in the narrow way,
and, when earthly things are past,
bring our ransomed souls at last
where they need no star to guide,
where no clouds thy glory hide.
In the heavenly country bright
need they no created light;
thou its light, its joy, its crown,
thou its sun which goes not down;
there for ever may we sing
alleluias to our King.

Coffee after the 10am services
Help is needed in serving tea, coffee and toast after the 10am
services. At present there is a very small, very dedicated band of
people who serve the refreshments on a weekly basis, but they
need more help. It may be that some weeks there is no provision
after the services unless people step forward and help out .
If you can give some time to take on this role, please speak to
either Alex or Zelma.
Can you help
with children’s ministry at All Hallows?
We are seeking to develop and strengthen the care and support
we provide for children at All Hallows during the parish
communion services each week. In particular we are looking for
those who are committed to this important part of the church’s
ministry and who could take on the following roles:
- Jam Club Coordinator: to prepare the rotas and ensure that the
sessions are adequately staffed by leaders.
- Children’s Groups’ Champion: to prepare displays for inside the
church and write occasional feature for our website and
newsletter.
- Singers: to lead the children singing 3 songs in the chapel before
they separate into their different groups (no more than once a
term). You don’t need to be able to play an instrument.
- Leaders: to work in pairs to supervise either Jammy Fingers or
Jam Club sessions, again on an occasional basis (no more than
once a term)
This is an opportunity to raise money for SPEAR. Here’s how it
works:
1 Invite some friends, neighbours or colleagues for a ‘Soup
Kitchen’ meal
2
Ask your guests to make a donation to SPEAR
3
Provide a simple meal and some warm hospitality
4
Collect contributions and pass the money to All Hallows for
SPEAR
Our Event Host Pack is now ready (£1 donation) and provides
everything you need to get started: invitations, soup recipe
suggestions, information about SPEAR and homelessness, Gift Aid
forms and more! Contact the Parish Office or Rebecca Wallis
(rebecca.e.a.wallis@gmail.com or 07801 481203) for more
information. Please add your name to the list at the back of the
church to host your event before 28 February!

Quiz & Chips – 28 February, 7.30pm
There will be a quiz night with fish and chip supper and licensed
bar on Saturday 28th February. Tickets are £8. More Details and
tickets will be available soon!
Our New Vicar
Father Kevin Bell has been appointed to be our new Vicar at All
Hallows. His induction service will be on Monday 2nd February
2015 at 7.30pm.
If you are intending on coming along to this service, please sign
up in the narthex.
100 Club
Some of the congregation have asked about the 100 Club and
why money for this has not been collected for 2015. Alex, who
ran this for many years has decided to give this up and no one has
come forward to volunteer to take it on, so unfortunately it has
had to fold.
Many thanks to you who supported this money raiser over the 6
years that it ran. We raised in the region of £2000 for church
funds.
Next week’s collection
Next week the collections from our services will be going towards
church funds.
